Hi guys,

I have been getting back into 40k recently and playing with my brother. He plays Dark Angels and I play Orks.

At the moment we are only playing 500 point games and, frankly, I am stomping him pretty easily. He always does some damage with shooting but eventually gets overwhelmed in close combat. Any vehicles he takes for support get taken out by my deff koptas.

He is not a bad sport, but he is getting understandably disheartened because it seems like nothing works to stop my boyz. I said to him that things might become more balanced when we expand to 1k, but he is reluctant to buy more stuff if he simply can't win. Is this match up really doomed for him? Do you guys have any tactics/army selection tips for him? He is adamant that he doesn't want me to just "let him win".

Also, my plan for 1k was to get a list that looks (off the top of my head) like this:

HQ:

Warboss, 'eavy armour, cybork body, attack squig, power klaw, lukky stikk

Elites:

6 Nobz in a Trukk with waaagh banner and 1x power klaw

Troops:

20 shoota boyz inc. 2 x big shootaz and a nob with power klaw

19 slugga boyz

Fast attack:

Deff kopta with rokkit launcha

Deff kopta with rokkit launcha

Heavy support:

2 x Deff rolla battlewagons

This list would not be too "cheesy" or whatever for him, would it? I got a good deal on a second hand AOBR boxed set and I am trying to make its contents go as far as I can.

Bolter banner, allied ig with first rank second rank. Against orks the more shots the better. If you wanted to ruin his day ally ig take azreal and stick him in a blob or conscript squad. Thats about all i can help with, i am extremely unfamiliar with dark angels and main ig, if you take ig allies that i can help with. Sorry. If i cant help.

The west is on its death spiral.

It was a good run.

I would think that a DA command squad with a Standard of Devastation (aka Dakka banner) should go a long way in improving his damage output. It would be a tight squeeze at 500pts but definitely manageable at 1000pts. I would start there and build around it. Whirlwinds also come to mind and cheap, basic libbies with Prescience. These seem like good tools against orks.

Orks vs DA at 500 points will not give a balanced fight. Definitely encourage him to expand his forces.

As far as specific tactics, a Bolter banner is a great tool to fight orks with, as well as whirlwinds. It is hard to fit the Dark Angels real toys into a 500 point list.

Second the dakka banner above. Land raiders are a nightmare for orks to deal with, and a land raider crusader would do a lot of damage to your horde.

It would help to know what his army list is at the moment, and what you are using at 500 to beat him.

His vehicles shouldn't be dying to one round of deffkoptas fire. Though I could see it being immobilized.

To counter deffkoptas anything with interceptor should work. Other than that he just needs to cause two wounds on it with anything, he doesn't even have to worry about insta kills on it because you are only bringing two in separate squads.

Maybe his tactics need work?

Will interceptor work on Kopters as they are Jetbikes, not Fliers?

FLAMERS.
At least they work for my army against an overwhelming foe. Just tell him to take as many flamers, rocket launchers. Maybe to combat your Battlewagons a few missiles and plasma (I never run tanks for DA).

Oh and definitely there are advantages to having DW and RW assault units. They have served me well in the past.

Expand his force and buy him a whirlwind. It's pieplates of doom will rock your world. I think it's about time you upgraded the points cap to 750 and fleshed out yoir forces more.

Even your coptas are no match for the mighty whirly!

DA army: 3500pts,
admech army: 600pts
ravenguard: 565 pts
