Salutations Dakkadakka. I'm currently sidetracking from my Krieg to paint some Space Marines in a zenithal style and I wanted opinions on the following:



I'd like to know if I should go with my original plan of doing orange accents to areas such as the helmet grill and the kneepads in a similar style to good ol' Clone Troopers?
My other idea was to use a dark red accent colour. What say you?

I'd say test out both but I like the original clone colors (red for sarges, yellow for captains) or maybe try blue like the 501st or yellow like on wans 212th

Orange I think. I also think you could do with more white in your zenithal passes, it's still a little grey.

The colours have really washed out of the pictures, it's not quite as grey in the flesh- I've used VMA USAF Medium Grey, USAF Light Grey, White Grey and a final edge highlight of White as I feel that 'proper-white' lacks depth but I see what you mean- it needs a bit more White Grey.

Orange sounds appealing depending on the shade, I'd personally skip the helmet grill though,

maybe just a Kneepad, Elbow pad, and the trim or vertical stripe on a shoulder pad, possibly the helmet crest and the weapon casing. That being said the exhausts on the Back Pack too.

Try the 2 tone tone helmet (I assume you just mean the beaky bit) on a a random helmet, it might be something you like but if it isn't reds/oranges are nasty to cover up with white. And you've put a fair amount of effort into it already without unintentionally having it resemble a swan. (No Offense)

Well I tried the orange and really quite like it. At least I did until I read your comment about it looking like a swan P4Painting lol.





Might change it to the stripe and sides of the helmet.

I actually quite like it and it is a nice complementary shade of Orange, if you get the backpack on him (definitely not a sanguinary guard one) and do the grill bit (where you stick banner poles and stuff) it should work out before you go redoing the whole helmet. Or even continue the orange as a stripe up to the crest and leave it there.

I'd Just do the pop out bits on the sides Orange, should be enough to give it some character and colour, and again the backpack bit that goes over the top.

At the end of the Day they belong to you so there's only you who needs to be happy with it =P

Seriously, though, very nice white. If you continue the stripe up the helmet it'll look OK, and I'd maybe orange the other knee pad.

Yep, grill is definitely going back to white! What I can only assume are the communications portions on the side of the helmet, the stripe and a stripe down the top of the backpack.

Yeah, the ears (communication portions) at orange, I'm not sure that anymore orange on the helmet would be good, I'd definitely raid the bits drawer for a couple of marine heads to just prime white and blob some orange on to try a few variations. And try them against the back pack too.

Then if you did the whole of the top centre panel on the back pack orange too like you see on some veteran style paint jobs.

The Back pack then becomes the Background to the white helmet.

Like the Icon btw and I assume these are the FW snipers? if so are they nice models?

So, keep the grill and do the "ears" and do a vet stripe on the backpack? Cool, these are going to be my Sternguard so that would fit nicely

These are indeed the MkIV Recon Marines. They're really rather nice- not as multipart as I first thought but the quality is very good.

Sweet, it's one of the few Forge World infantry squads I find myself hovering over at checkout, those and some Rotor Cannon guys lol

Anyway, how's it goin' not had a progress pic for a while, hoping they've either had time to grow on you or you've made them look more awesome! (whilst secretly wishing for a DE Scourge feathered jumppack =P)

I personally liked it but I agree that an orange helmet stripe would probably look better! The colors look great together tho!

Cheers. I've redone the mask section of the helmet to it's original white. I tried my best to keep the black lining as smooth and crisp as possible but I find that after mucking about with the airbrush for a long period of time my hand starts to shake. Might leave doing brushwork until after a cup of tea and a biscuit...

I'm also gearing myself up to to battle damage and weathering *gulp*

As an addendum, I've always found basing to be the hardest part of any miniature- up until recently I've never done more than some sand, bit of a drybrush and then some static grass. I'll try and get some pictures up later of the base I've done for this dude as a tester (I've tried to make it "complementary" to the colours on the figure).

Does anyone have any ideas what to do with the cloaks on these guys? I don't have a clue what to do with them- I actually thought about keeping them black but highlighting them using hawk turquoise to compliment the armour and the eyes...

I think black with a high-contrast blue highlight would actually be really cool, it would give them the look of a sci-fi super-cloak that has active camo rather than traditional camo.
