Ok so in my gaming group just about all of us have a cut throat style of play. Cheese armies, overpowered armies, or dirty underhanded tricks are the norm. We don't abuse it outside our group when we go to tourneys or other events but we all enjoy a laugh at trying to kill each other as fast as we can all while trying to take objectives and such. This kind of thing has been going on since second edition for us (yes we are that old as we are all in mid 40's). It's kind of like a game of one up mans ship between us. Recently, one of my arch nemeses came to town with an all broadside/stealth army unbound list (unfortunately i do not have his list). It had 10 or 12 (don't remember the exact number but you get the idea) broadsides in singles with pods/rail including the suit commander kitted with 2xplasma and 5 3 man units of stealth suits at 1500pts all had skyfire. My list had 3 flyrants with 2xdevs and 2xharpies naked and 3 dakkafexen with 2xdevs and 3 shrikes stock (for mobil synapse on the fexen though i hate warriors now because of what they did to them). We were playing a maelstrom mission and even though i was able to kill most of the suits i was tabled by the stealth units due to taking the brunt of the broadside suits firepower beforehand. Ok, so here's the question: I found with Onslaught i was able to keep pace with the flyrants for synapse. So what should i spend the 90 pts on? I took out a biovore and zoey to get the shrikes but i find there just doesn't seem to be much for 90 pts that would get er done quick or be a force multiplier that is worth the points. So what would you change up? Drop one fex and the shrikes to add a deep threat trygon prime and run the fexen through the tunnel maybe? Lemme hear your ideas peeps.

Maybe a running Malanthrope to give your jinks 2+? Adds a bit more survivability.

malanthrope qould indeed be a great idea, I wouldnt touch the shrikes in a cheese list at all, they just die too fast, I would consider the warriors before the shrikes especially if its just to follow dakkafexes since a 4+ArSv is much better then the 5+ the shrikes have. if your going unbound with full cheese then why dont you just take 6 flyrants, this leaves you with 120pts to get a venomthrope in bastion to give them a solid 2+jink save

I have been running bugs for a looooong time, so you will have to excuse me for being ignorant of the current rules concerning the malanthrope. I have the second edition of IA apoc. Is there a new edition that gives the malanthrope an extra ability to prevent his sudden and unfortunate death at the hands of a railgun?

nope a railgun from a hammerhead will still pop the malanthrope, but getting a cover save could help, the tau player would require to use markerlights on him, and railguns arent really what tau are using anymore in this meta, high yield missile pods are what the HS slot for Tau are for now and they dont hurt the Malanthropes that much(yes they will kill one but they spent a lot of points for that one malanthrope to die). a venomthrope bastion will survive the HYMP tho with its 14AV all round.

Ya, remember the current meta doesn't exist in our gaming groups bid to kill each other as fast as possible. The meta only exists for us when we are going to a tourney or when other gamers visit the shop. So, with that being said, railguns and other high strength one shot wonders are all over the place along with higher wound to shot percentage weapons like the pods. All my opponents suits had was pods/railguns except his HQ who had twin plasma and he had the added benefit of knowing my write up from the previous week. During that game his never ending deamons list in effect lost the game even if by the maelstrom rules he won by one victory point, still he viewed it as a loss with only having 3 models of his at game end but only having killed 3 of mine. Although i must say the thought of replacing the 3 shrikes with 2 Venomthropes to run with the fexen might make my enemy have to rethink his firing options with them being a harder unit to crack.

The benefit of the new Malanthrope is that it's giving your dakkafexen brood synapse as well as shrouded...Just saying. I've got mine coming in the mail as I type
