So yeah, I already started painting my ´crons the traditional way but due to work I just don´t have the time these days to make progress with the speed I want to. So I came up with another theme that works with dipping, and I quite like it. Has an egyptian yet alien vibe going for it.
The whole thing took me 5 hours. In that time I would´ve maybe finished the basecoat with "traditional" painting... if even that. Did some damage on the blue parts, blended the Warscythe. I wanted a slightly broken down gold tone ( not yellowish ) and found a spray that fit perfectly. I´m aware that the triarch symbol is upside down, but seeing what kind of anti-christs these things are on the table it´s just fitting right.

Thanks mate. I guess it´s because I´ve previously dipped 4 armies and have a certain routine to it.

My only complaint with it is that the large, flat sections of the arc could use a bit of blending to add interest to it. It's a really crisp job, and incredible for 5 hours' work, but personally I tend to get frustrated with how flat metallics look when I apply them to a large model without many contours.

Were it painted in a traditional manner I´d probably atleast highlight the metal edges ( haven´t really tried blending with flake paints ) but dipping tends to kill all but the most radical of blends off.
Doing it afterwards would probably break the shading and look bad. Basically a wash-like effect is left by the dip, and it darkens all colours and makes them different than what they originally were, as a transparent shade of brown is applied everywhere. Painting on top of that with a non-darkened, original colour wouldn´t probably look that good on a large flat surface.
Your point is valid by all means, but I think dipping and blending only work with very small areas ( like the Warscythe ) and require a full painting over the said area.

True enough, my barge follows the black/green scheme because as in creative as I feel the end effect just looks gorgeous, but that ain't a 5-hour job by any means. It takes so long that I'm really put off buying more cron vehicles so I don't blame you one bit for looking for a shortcut.
I dunno. I think that maybe a tiny bit of the GW light bronze layer paint would really pick out the shine and create a more "sectioned" look to the top arch, but it's a question of style. Some people really like things to look perfect close up and under great lighting, others go for more of a "standing several feet away" approach where they over exaggerate detail to make it look more intricate from a distance. No doubt it would add time to the paint job though, and for five hours work that looks smashing.
