I have been playing 40k since the beginning of 5th edition and my main army is guard which I have amassed a little over 16000 points of

I chose guard because I LIKE tanks and I like smashing things with tanks and that is pretty much the entire reason I chose guard

But I want to start a new army one that focuses more on close combat then range

Something that can be somewhat competitive and allow for some smashtacular fun at the same time.

I have narrowed it down to chaos space marines (khorne), Orks, and Tyranids but can not honestly decide between to lot of them.

So I was hoping to get some advice on how these armies play or behave on the table top

Thank you

Well, World Eaters CSM is going to be centered around land raiders full of berzerkers and supporting units
Orks seems to be about putting as many models on the table as possible so that you can get to assault with some of them
Nids seems to be about taking lots of really tough Monstrous creatures.

So, ranking them from quality of troops to quantity of troops, it seems to be Tyranids>World Eaters>Orks

World Eaters are probably the weakest faction of the three

Have you looked into the Blood Angels? New dex and lots of good CC to boot.

Have to echo the BA sentiment. Lots of CC and the codex and formations look promising. However, if you want to avoid the SM route, I would go either Tyranids or Orks. Tyranids are great at CC and shooting, and can often do both well. Orks are better at CC than shooting, but really are just about throwing a ton of gak at the other guy. Last, CSM seem to be weak in CC, save of select units. I would advise against them, unless you really want a CSM army.

Blood Angels again. With all the new Formations making Reserves a VERY viable choice, including assaulting from Reserves if certain requirements are met, you can get a lot of use out of a Close Combat list. Tyranids aren't as much about Assault as they used to be, but can bring so much S6 dakka to the table that it makes up for it.

Choas would need a Khorne/Nurgle mix to really bring the Assaulting hurt. Nurgle Spawns and Khorne Juggerlord are very good units, with Bikes mixed in as well. The Land Raider with Berserkers is of course the only current way to get them into CC safely... Kinda a letdown honestly.

Slaanesh csm is also an option. 20 i5 marines with fnp and access to infiltrate with a right warlord - what's not to like.

Also most have rending and slaaneshi daemons are pretty spooky to suddenly have upon you if you aren't careful (knows from experience haha)

CSM don't have rending sadly.

If role play matters, just remember Tyranids are somewhat limited in that area. They want to kill and consume everything, and theres not much else you can do to change that. Unlike most other armies, where you have to option to personalize them a little further (piracy, mercenaries, survivors, explorers, traitors, loyalists, assassins, personal body-guards ... etc).

On the table I think all 3 CSM, Orks and Tyranids are good.

I am thinking more on the ork side of things

I like a lot of their models plus In have a friend who has 2 of the storm claw boxes and he would sell me the ork part if I wanted it

Also, the the new blood angels codex did they change the fluff so that they aren't basically twilight and whats different.

In the warp, searching for Marbo

Heheh, as a fellow Guardsmen, I went Blood Angels after Guard.

After all these years of searching for Marbo...he found me. Heretics beware! He's back!
