Hi Guys,

SO I recently started WH/40k again after about a decade.

I looked over the models on GW for a couple weeks for the models I liked most in the current range before I picked the army.
Used to play Nids... enough said.. new models are gak imo... so I thought I'd go for some space elves and maybe even win a battle and do some shooting for a change...

So what I have incoming so far is: Box of guardians with support gun, a box of 10 DA(thanks ebay! ) , some HE halberds, axes and such for converting the exarch... and about 5 howling banshees.

This will take me some time to paint as Its been a while and I want to take my time with it. Providing this project is finished in about 1-2 months I will need some more models for Eldar army.
Question is what do I go for next? (Never too late to start eBay hunting )

Obviously a HQ would be the next viable option. But there are soooooo many :S

I really want to avoid a "cheesy" OP build... I like variety and using tactics.

From a tactical battle plan point of view so far, I got the idea of: use Karandras attach him to a squad of wraith blades with axes and shields they now gain infiltrate(unless I am not understanding the rules correctly) then jump out in the middle of the line, split , charge Agro priority squad A) with wraiths and squad B) with Karandras and go in to challenge. I'd field many Rangers on the flanks to shoot at anything that moves on the flanks. Also, deep strike some swooping hawks, behind the bottle neck, grenade pack unit A) drop behind a tank with LOS to unit b) shoot las guns and then assault tank with haywire grenades. Or variations of the above. Anyone has tried this theory ?

I've been reading the rules and codex but have not had any games yet. (don't have any models yet ..... ) So not sure how sound my theory will be in practice

The Rangers won't kill much if anything and you'd do better spending the troop points on Jetbikes to actively take back the flanks, which opens you up to Farseer on Jetbike as an HQ in the squad, and Warlocks in any others for more combat buffs.

I love Rangers and use them a lot, but I've had games where ten Rangers made two kills over the course of the game, and neither was a kill that mattered. on the other hand, I've had them camp an objective and just never move to rack up points in Maelstrom, but Jetbikes are hands down better.

If you want a Flank Protection unit, War Walkers. A squad of three with weapons of your choice, Scatter Laser and Starcannon for instance, gives 4 S6 shots and 2 S6 AP2 twin linked shots. Add in a single Wraithknight for a 'down their throats' centerpiece and you have some good board control.

You might want to look at Dark Eldar allies too though. Sounds like you'll get some good use out of Deep Strike transports like the Raider and Venoms.

Will say, Tyranids, no matter bad they look, are a shooting army now. The Carnifex and Flying Hive Tyrant both have the 12 S6 twin linked guns, and the Exocrine can make a decent build usingthe Living Artillary Node Formation. Very Shooty. But I do agree, they look diseased and crippled. I also miss our old Nids...

Duly noted.
If upgraded to pathfinder with illic they do become rather pricy point wise. Shround and sharpshot worth it ?

You into the sim han way of doing things ?
Not sure how I feel about jet bikes, I absolutely love the idea of shining spears even though I can just see the fail haha

hmmm are there kits for warlocks/farseers on bikes? seen a autrach one I think.

Actually I run Alaitoc or pseudo-Corsairs but understand the strengths of other Eldar builds. My usual opponents are a inept tactician with Tau and a Chaos player still learning the ropes so I intentionally don't bring the best units. Don't even own a Wraithknight.

Pathfinders can work if you use them solely for what they do best. If you pick and choose the special guns or heavy weapons in a squad and fire all shots at that from a midfield objective, they can do very well. I pair that up with a Falcon to 'clean up' the squad that lost their claws. And a Vindicare Assassin to snipe at Armor and HQs. I haven't lost yet (playing casually) when playing lengthwise on the table. But, it's a lot of points and the entire list has to be built to support the idea or it fails miserably.

There aren't kits for the Seers and Warlocks, but plenty of conversion tutorials on YouTube and I think I remember a 3rd party Conversion kit but I can't remember where I saw it at.

hmm Im thinking get a seer head from a bit store and some wraith tabard to make into a cape plus some HE halberd/farseer spear for the wtf value haha

But I'll see whats youtube saying.

I got some CC HE weapons coming by bitz for conversions
The DA exarch will either end up with the lions of chrace champion double axe or one of the halberd weapons
the codex states "power weapon" after all... lol

rather then walkers I was more inclined towards vypers... jink and better mobility.

What's your colour scheme ?

I run Vypers from time to time but they're... not good. Shuriken and Starcannons for MEQ killing but they die every game I bring them in. 150pts for two I am guaranteed to lose. Now, anything shooting at them isn't shooting at other units, which is nice, but if I Jink, I have to snapfire. And since I have the dice that roll all 1s, Jink hurts me almost more than it helps. War Walkers get a constant 5+ AND have the Battle Focus. Meaning they shoot, then Run back into either cover or out of LOS. Vypers are forced to sit where they shot from, and at 24" range if I want to use the Cannons. So I'm in Bolter range at that point.

What War Walkers lose in mobility is made up for with Scout. Put them up front, Scout ahead, they don't need to charge with the rest of the units. They can hang back with long ranged guns. If you want the best of both worlds though, that needs the Hornet. Forge World model slightly bigger than the Vyper. AV11, not Open-Topped and can mount twin Pulse Lasers (S8 AP2 2 shot).

Alaitoc has a bone-white underside and dark tops with blue speckles. Almost like a lazy camouflage. But most of my models are still gray plastic because I really hate painting and ran out of primer. The Guardians are blue with white-ish (supposed to be yellow) helmets.

It seems wrong, but War Walkers are exeptionally mobile (6+d6 move, with shooting in between, Scout, and due to Scout, Outflank), always have a 5++ compared to Vypers jinking for a 4+, and much better loadout options. Love my Vypers, but my WW is just... Better. That, and I love my FA slot.

Pulse Laser Hornets are substantially undercosted.

DA Exarchs can take any power weapon, but mine never does much in Assault. Lance, only because it looks fething awesome, but they only charge as backup anyways, so anything else would be better. Do what looks sweet, IMO. And HE bits - and DE bits - can make some totally sweet conversions. Even more so if you want to throw some Exodites in!

For the most part in our dex, just don't spam anything, and you'll have a fun army. Keep the Rangers to one unit (5-man) for now, start with only one vyper, etc. The only unit that can't really do much is Harlies, but they are too much awesome for that to matter. Even Banshees and Storm Guardians can do some work.

(Although, if you want a melee threat, Scorpions are better. Just treat them like bullies, not a CQC unit. Kinda ASM-equivelents)

@shark - No painitng!? Heresy!!!!
hehe... Well I still don't technically have anything to paint :(
Every day I come from work hoping there's a bit of plastic goodness waiting for me...grrrrr cmon postal service don't let me down!

Fair point about the WW.. damn hard to think without going through some battles. Those measurements seem deceptively small Some stuff looks crap on paper...
Talking of Vypers. I saw a farseer conversion when thinking about jetbke options, seen one where someone stuck the pointing farseer model in the back of a vyper like in a chariot. I have to say that looked bad ass! lol.
Could pass for a bad man jet-bike conversion or is the "base" to big?

@bharring - Yeah the DA exarch thing, is totally for the badass factor Well not entirely, shimmering shield for the squad a nice little perk
I'm pretty sure he'd get squished by a pre-pubescent marine fresh from basic training in cc.

I intend to run all the aspects in my army rather then go with mono cheese.
I wana be running banshees and harleys straight down the middle screaming and dancing coz it be funny to watch people not being able to decide what to shoot at

I wana geta kanadars coz his fluff is just badman space elf fluff...
