Hi, I'm really new to warhammer 40k but I've been watching a lot of videos on the game. I've been looking to start building a army (one model at a time) but I'm stuck between a couple options. I would like to know some tips about making a army ect. Plus I really don't know if I have a local shop where i can try the army out.
Factions I've been looking at:
Tau- love the way they look and how they play
Blood Angels- cool look on flyers and tanks
Eldar-love the look of the wraithgaurds and hemlock
Tryanids- Awesome miniatures and new drop pods (idk about their play style though)

Welcome to the Mayhem. My advice is to go over all intel you can regarding the armies that might fit "you" More likely its an army more suited to your past experience as a game player.
Example
In a MMO what role do you like to play

so the basic setup for dark eldar is a few really good close bat units, and some good gun ships. they are super fast and swoop in from the sky. they use fliers and the gun ships to provide cover fire while witches and other crazy stuff flies in close on their little ships and jump into close combat off their ships.... they are very frigile when it comes to recieving incoming fire though so you have to smart . (pirates) ( speed, maneuverability and aggression)

eldar are more shooty with a few good close combat units their grav tanks can deal alot of fire power and can take a punch, their fliers are fast and can also deal a punch, they have heavy weapons patforms and standard troops to stand and hold the line but also have many very specialized units that are very good a particular ask on the battlefield. ( ancient smart, wise, advanced race aliens)

tau are the new race, they excel at shooting and suck in hand to hand, the follow the greater good, colonizing planets ( join us or die strategy) they big thing is high power long range, and using units together to destroy a target, they like battle suits, and jet backs and mercenaries.

blood angels are the good gys that are crazy and have a blood thirst. they excel in close combat, and jump packs. they also a shooty support as does any marine army, they fly or deep strike or teleport into your face and then slap you around a bit . have red and black models which is cool.

tyranids is a horde army but if you play a monsterous creature list it can be more elite. its exactly what it looks like they are bugs and they eat everything in site. have no allies, and have a big variation when it comes to flying walking, burrowing, slithering , jumping, shooting, you get the picture.
hope i helped!

Something that I found was once you have got a game size force for the army you collect, 500 to 1000 pts, your eyes start looking at the models for the other races. I started on Eldar and really enjoy them but now I have three 1000 pt armies, Orks and Blood Angels.

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't expect the first army you build on to be the only army you build on through your table top career. Pick out two or three armies, put the names in a hat and start on the first one you pick out with the other/s put temporarily aside for when you're happy with your first.

Adds to variety which helps with painting the models (bored of painting Orks? Paint an eldar model) and keeping your games fresh.

I'd go with Tau. They look awesome, and have some cool quirks. They also have a lot of mechs and drones, so you have armor and fodder. They're not too expensive either. I personally play IG which is fun because of the variety of tanks, ordnance, and the amount of guys you can get into the field.

Thanks I agree they look fun and awesome to build. But I'm afraid of GW shutting down..

I kinda looked into that, and although it seems like their stocks are taking a beating, I don't believe they'll go out of business. I believe the audience and amount of WH40k players and people who paint, play, and read the books are too many for the company to fail.

"It is a well kept secret that the Board of Directors of GW are in the same situation as the God-Emperor of Mankind from Warhammer 40,000. Their defiled corpse-bodies lay dormant upon their Publishing Thrones, maintaining only the smallest semblance of life due to the constant influx of money. It is unknown what would happen if the Board of Directors were allowed to truly die. Some say Games Workshop would collapse in on itself, ceasing the production of all that is good and expensive. Perhaps Games Workshop would be free from the necrotic collar of the Directors' irresistible will, and the company would be free to explore new areas, such as advancing the story of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, or reviving older "specialist" games like Space Hulk and Blood Bowl."

I'd say go with the army you like the sound of or the look off. Battle ability is like whatever imho

I'm guna be splitting my attention between whfb and 40k. It refreshing to paint some chain/scale mail models from time to time and some dragonz

I just really hope something comes through the post soon. I have nothing to get stuck into still (C'mon royal mail. Do it for me...)

I don't think gw is going to go out of business any time soon. With the prices they charge for plastic/resin
I mean a box of blood dragons is like £63 for 5 avalry units... whereas dragon princes of caledor are 20...

Tau & Tyranids play completely differently. TAU is generally a shooting gunline with cover save shenanigans. Tyranids can be played alot of ways. They have shooty elements, really strong flying elements, psychic powers. They can be played with a large model count like a hoard. They strengths imo are close combat with Monstrous Creatures.

After the fall of Chaos Eldar tried to reform themselves, while Dark Eldar didnt. Eldar has strong Psychic powers, Dark Eldar Dont. Eldar Vehicles can take more of a beating. Dark Eldar Vehicles are like paper. Dark Eldar is somewhat faster, and can assault better as they have assault transports. They are both very mobile, but Eldar is generally lower model count and higher durability, Dark Eldar is a higher model count, more chaos, and less durability. They are both Viable, right now Eldar has arguably an easier to play and better codex but thats painting with a broad brush.

I think Tyranids are the coolest of your selection, awesome miniatures. And a huge variety of them. I'm a space marine guy, just because I've read a ton of their novels, been into the video games for awhile (can't wait for eternal crusade)....But from what I've seen/read the tyranids are a pretty comp. ready army.
But as others have stated, which army connects with you best? Hold your attention to them, etc.

That looks like a pretty great starter army for tau, from the looks of it , youll be using alot of drones to soak up wounds and try to pin your enemy, using marker lights and long range fire from your fire warriors to take out infantry, and using your battle suits to deep strike in and take out tanks with close range melta, and your big giant battle suit guy to soak up wounds as well and counter or hold off your opponents strongest point of attack with your commander...
the only thing i dont see that i normally see in tau armies is rail guns. haha
ide say that plus buy your favorite model in the tau army because the game is about having fun and how are you going to do that with out your personal favorite model.
