Does anyone have any experience with using web hosting services? I'm trying to find a good/cheap one, but this will be my first website, so I don't want to get scammed/ripped off. Who do you guys recommend?

Also, what kinds of "extras" are worth paying for? Security, privacy, etc.

What kind of website? What are your requirements?

I use dreamhost myself. It's something like $120/yearly, and then any extra domains i want to host I can, I just have to pay for the domain registration. It's linux based though, so if you're doing something in .NET then you might need to look for another option.

I won't be doing anything in .net yet. I just want to get experience with html/css and javascript. I've never taken a website live before, so it's honestly more about the experience and learning the details.

The couple there are basically just generic blogs. I mostly use it more for the other internet services, like ftp and email, and running a mysql server.

I can show you one though. I'm hosting it for a friend of mine, but she manages the content. I think she does most of the editing through the built in wordpress editor:

Honestly, if you're looking to do it just for the sake of it, there's probably cheaper options out there. Of course... I'm not sure what those are.

I'm switching everything I have over to Dreamhost right now. They seem good, but I didn't realize going into it how much of a hassle it would be to transfer all my domain names over and update this or that DNS thing. But they've been helpful with all that.

I managed to get a 1 year subscription for $35. I just did a search for dreamhost promo codes and I found one that knocked the price down to just under $3 a month
