Hey, Dakka. This summer, I'll be going to London for about two weeks vacation. Two of those days, we're going to Nottingham, mostly to go experience the birthplace of Warhammer 40K!
Anyways, I want to take with me a small detachment of Necrons over there, but I want to make sure they'll be safe during the transit, and not end up like this guy:

After snooping around, I found this case from Tablewar:

It looks pretty compact, safe, and small enough to take as a carry-on. I come asking anyone who owns one: is it worth it? Would you take yours on a plane?

I would get a proper foam case, I don't trust magnetic bases to hold everything in place for a whole plane ride. That case is more for tournament players since it let's you quickly pack and up pack between games.

For $100 check out feldherr or kr miniatures. Feldherr would be a good choice since you can get them on American amazon.com

How small is a "small detachment of Necrons?" We talking a game of Kill Team or a proper list? Carry-on or checked-in? If you're checking the case in as a separate piece of luggage, you'll need something that can be locked to prevent casual inspection (and removal) by bad actors and durable to survive the baggage (mis)handlers. I don't have the case you linked, but it does not look like it is rated for air travel except maybe as a carry-on, but then you'd need to check dimensions. Also, if you have anything in a carry-on that looks like it could remotely be used as a weapon, good luck getting on board the plane! All it takes is one dumb TSA agent, amd those are not in short supply in that organization.

Honestly, if it's something you want protected at all costs, don't skimp. Buy a brand name case that is advertised as suitable for air travel. A trip to the UK isn't cheap, so what's another $200-$300 to make sure your little men arrive intact?

I love my Tablewar case (I don't have the mini), but I would be very concerned about it being able to protect minis on a flight. I would NEVER trust it to the checked baggage, and I could see it getting jostled badly in carryon. The strength of the magnets depends on your choice of magnets, but your minis could come loose and damage each other if a sharp shock or extended jostling tears one loose from its magnetic hold.

However, it is an awesome case for quick deployment and removal of your minis. If that is a strong concern, you might use it, and pack the interior with bubble wrap or foam peanuts for transport as carryon.

Otherwise, a padded foam case would probably be safer for your minis--but even then, I'd choose carryon every time (or even ship them to the UK separately).
