So, the Unstoppable Advance rule (part of Forlorn Hope in the Death Korps: Assault Brigade army list) in IA:12 states that:

"As long as it is part of the army's primary detachment, each time a Death Korps Infantry platoon has been completely destroyed or has fallen back off the table, an identical new Death Korps Infantry platoon is placed in the controlling player's ongoing reserves if they wish to"

Now, consider the situation where I attach an independent character to a squad in a platoon and the platoon is later destroyed. The IC should still be a part of the platoon as it can't leave its unit except during movement phases and counts as part of the it for all rules purposes. So my question is simply:

If a platoon is destroyed together with an attached IC, as it states that an identical platoon is placed in ongoing reserves, would I get an identical IC back as part of the platoon?

That is wishful thinking but clearly not the rules.

Identical in terms of how it was purchased in the army list. Otherwise it would be 'identical' in all sorts of ways, such as having taken casualties or all sorts of effects.

That was my thought as well and RAI is obviously clear.

However, as it simply says identical, it could be identical as purchased, deployed or (as some would probably claim) as of the time you invoke the rule, i.e. destroyed. Comparing it to Send in the Next Wave from the old Imperial Guard codex, that one clarifies it a little.

Note: Not trying to abuse the list. Assault Brigade has 1 independent character and it is hardly the best one. Just curious if I could get a little more mileage out of a below-average army.

I wouldn't try it. Imperial armour 13 has a similar thing and there you can attach enforcers to infantry squads, which has a stronger argument, but would still be contested every game you play.
