I'm kinda building a list in boredom of potential factions you could create an army for that would be heavily converted/unique looking and might require a counts-as list to be playable. Mostly the reason I'm doing this is to decide on which sub-factions I want to convert/paint at a later date (I don't play anymore, just enjoy converting/painting.)

Curious if I've missed any or if anyone has any good suggestions.

Haha love it. I have done dark mech and pre-heresy thousand sons myself.

A lot of these can now be covered by the renegades and heretics army lists in IA13

Most of these dont require a counts-as list in order to be playable.

These can largely be done using the IA13 Renegades and Heretics list:

Dark Mechanicus (Magos Heretek HQ allows bionics across the board)
Plague Zombies (option as troops with a nurgle marked HQ)
Chaos Beastmen (Potential as mutants, troops in IA13)
Blood Pact (Elite Guard, IA13 marked veterans)
Renegade Militia
Chaos Ogryn (IA13 Elites Choice)

In a FW Book
Corsairs
Death Korps of Krieg
Elysian Drop Troops

Covered by core GW codex:
Steel Legion
Tallarn Desert Raiders
Valhallan Ice Warriors
Vostroyan First Born
Catachan Jungle Fighters

And for farsight enclave they look much the same as normal tau battlesuits, just more of them. It'd be like saying Sentinels of Terra look massively different to core IF.

That said you missed Gu'vesa allies to Tau, which I'm running using IA13 Renegades list.

Soon his foes would learn that the only thing more dangerous than a savage three hundred pound brute is a savage three hundred pound brute with a plan - Ork Codex

Yea in my spreadsheet I have noted which codices/books are useable to run the armies and most of them work.

Farsight Enclave was an oversight by me, hadn't realized they got a mini-book that fleshed them out, everyone used to convert them as more "on the run"/stealthy/savage Tau. I'll drop them from the list. I'll note Gue'vessa (previously I had them just grouped under Tau Auxillaries, but with Kroot as their own then Gue'vesa deserve it too.)

My mistake, I figured Tau auxiliaries was things like Demiug, Nicassar, Tallarians, Garg. That said just one Tau allies alone you could go absolutely nutso on conversions.

Tallarian Dog Soldiers
Nicassar Psykers
Demiug Miners
Galg (Space Frogs, Bucky O'hare style)
Morralians (no description)
Ranghorn (no description)
Hrenians (no description)
Nagi (mind controlling worms)
Formosians.

I believe using IA13 as a base with various dedications, upgrades and unit entries you could go absolutely nutso on conversions for a Tau Auxiliary Army

Hell, I had considered running Ork Auxillaries given how easy they fit onto some Tau bitz. There's too many damn options both within current codex and without.

Here's the spreadsheet:

Hrud are interesting, I'm wondering how the hell you'd even make that army considering their appearance hasn't been locked in lol

Squats I thought were extinct in modern canon?

Fallen you have Cyphers dataslate to help, also a black legion supplement Chosen list may encompass them pretty well.

Technobarbarians again IA13 may well help, lower BS vehicles but cheaper and more of them. IA13 really is the multi-tool of humanoid armies just in scope and variety that it covers.

Orks could also go with:
Freebooters
Feral Orks
Grot Rebels

As varieties for modelling

Other than that the list looks pretty extensive.

Squats homeworlds got eaten, they still exist just... less

Technobarbarians are the ones I want to do the most. If I had just a gak ton of money to blow I'd make them combining Warriors of Chaos bits, Imperial Guard bits, and all kinds of vehicles from orks, imperials, forge world, and other mini games lol

There are loads of nations/species mentioned in the early horus heresy books which would make good count-as.

Most notably the megaarachnid.

Oh yea, I'm still privy to the technocracy but sadly they're extinct =(

Edit: I'm reading about human rebellions and damn there's a lot of Dark Eldar corrupting humans to cause rebellions and making generals turn enslavers for the Dark Eldar lol

Wow, that's quite an extensive list you've got so far. A sub-faction that would interest me are non-Imperial humans. Not humans turned to chaos, or those who have broken away from the Imperium, just those that haven't been exposed to the Imperium yet. A world or system that was cut off during the Dark Age of Technology, and was never rediscovered during the Great Crusade or after. I imagine their technology would still be based off of ancient STCs, but there's a lot of liberty there to convert and create how their technology may have evolved over the last 10,000+ years without contact with the rest of humanity. I'm not sure what to call them. I think it would largely be based on their individual story. Non-Imperial Humans is nice and generic to start with.

Agreed, honestly that's kinda what I like about technobarbarians, rebels, or pirates, they're just non-Imperial humans.

The big issue I think is that a non-Imperial army would probably use a lot of the same equipment as an Imperial one if they're still running on STCs, depending on which ones they were established with (although they could use a lot of wargear that's unknown to the Imperium ala undiscovered STCs or personal invention). Still would have a LOT of wiggle room though.

I'm going to add an entry to the table, I'm looking for any suggestions for bits that work well to create any of these factions.

IE: Exodites work well with High Elf, Wood Elf, Eldar, and Lizardman bits.

Adeptus mechanicus can be counts-as'd almost anything. Tyranids migh be a good fit since synapse is reminescent of servitor's mind lock, and big-ass automata can stand in for MC's. Or a more conventional skitarii force could be played as tau to represent the superior technology they have access to compared to IG/SM regulation equipment.

Noted! Tyranid is an interesting one, hadn't considered them.

Nids is actually what one of my friends suggested when he was looking into how to us 30K mechanicums in a counts as army for 40K:

Castellax as Carnifex's
Thallax as Warriors/Shrikes/Primes
Thralls as Termigants
Servitors as Hormagaunts
With a combination of either tech priests mounted on larger automata or just giant constructs filling out tyrants and so on

Soon his foes would learn that the only thing more dangerous than a savage three hundred pound brute is a savage three hundred pound brute with a plan - Ork Codex

Yup, and you can do cool but incredibly expensive things like taking the new Mechanicum tanks from FW, attacking a set of defiler legs and using the thing as a counts as Tyrannofex. Really when you're hitting counts-as the only limits are your imagination and budget.

Especially with the Admech who basically build whatever the hell they want.

Trying to think of good sources of pieces for general human armies. Fantasy in the form of Empire, Brets, and Chaos Warriors comes up, in 40k obviously Imperial Guard, not sure what else. Inquisition works for finding bits to make a commander out of, especially in armor.

Aside from the abundance of IG models?

Cadian, Catachan, Elysian, DkoK, Solar Auxilia

You can then look into fantasy:
Brettonian men at arms
Empire... anything
Chaos Warriors
Marauders.

For a more eastern vibe big fan of these guys

Also the high elf cloaked guys

Cultists from the Chaos Kits.

On the topic of commanders, my Gu'Vesa Commander in Carapace Armour, Refractor Field and Power Sword: (Was heavily WIP and havent done more upto date pics)

Love that Gue'vesa Commander, the construction is a bit rough but the actual idea of it is awesome. (I stopped messing with green stuff, I failed too many times with it..)

I'm interested in the Noisome Reek now, their name basically sounds like space Skaven.

Also just checked out your link in your signature, we've been using your Imperial Fists as a baseline for paint jobs for ours for the exact yellow we've been trying to achieve rofl
