Subject: unbound formations?

hey guys, im just now getting into 7th again, quick question:
can formations be unbound too? unbound is ignoring the FOC, formations may force you to get certain units (2 troop, 1 fast for example). who overrides who?
or are they seperate entities?
for example, i want to Baal Strike Force Detachment, but dont want to get the second troop unit, can i just go unbound? (note that in this example, the army consists only out of 1 formation)
would that work?

No.
To elaborate more your get set bonuses from a formation for taking it exactly as listed. If you do not take it as listed you have not taken the formation and therefore do not recieve the bonuses.

There is a difference between Formations and Detachments.
All formations are detachments but not all detachments are formations.
In order to get Detachment bonuses you must be battle-forged.
In order to get Formation bonuses you must meet the minimum requirements for that formation.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

I'm reasonably sure you can technically take full detachments as a subset of a larger unbound army.
You cannot however take formation or detachment benefits without meeting minimum requirements.

You don't make individual Detachments "Unbound"; instead, you choose whether or not your whole Army is Unbound.
You can't take any Detachments in an Unbound army. Formations are the only exception to this, but you still must take the whole formation in order to gain its special rules.

You cannot take detachments in an unbound list.
You can take formations however, and the models in the formation retain their formation bonuses as per the rulebook under formations and unbound.
