We have tournaments at the local shop periodically and in general people bring armies whose "competitiveness" are debatable, but definitely try to be challenging. As a Guard player, I mostly stuck to blobs, because I've got the models, love the look of a deployment zone full of bodies, and they're hard to kill. Next time, I wanted to field something that would make my opponents pause and go "...what am I supposed to do about THAT?" and this list is my effort. What do you think?
HQ
Command Squad
4x Plasma guns
Chimera
3 Priests
Troops
2x Platoon HQ
6x Guard Squads (2 blobs of 30) with 6 flamers
1x Conscripts (Blob of 30)
2x SWS (meltaguns)
Super Heavy
Baneblade with additional lascannon/HB turret
Knight Detachment
1 Knight Errant
~1830 (don't know for sure, I'm doing this "back of the envelope" at work...but there's a little wiggle room there)
An abstracted tally:
111 Bodies
Baneblade
Knight
Chimera
The general idea:
Bubblewrap the Baneblade and Knight with the mass of humanity until deepstriking meltas are no longer a threat (common in my meta), then surge across the table. Anti-armor from Baneblade, Knight, melta SMS. Anti-troop with blobs and Baneblade. Anti-MC with Knight, Plasma CCS, mass blob fire. I could easily tarpit most things that would end up being unkillable at range (Wraithknights, Greater Demons)
Weaknesses: No anti-air (blobs surprisingly good at killing FMCs though), no psychic phase (not a big deal around meta), slow as hell (Maelstrom of War scenarios would probably be tough), nothing to deal with units dug into good cover until the blobs reach their lines and swarm (considered having two Wyverns instead of the pair of melta SMS, but I think this list is already anti-infantry enough).
Anyway, I'd love to hear what you think.

Two superheavies is definately going to make an impact on your opponent, those not equipped for them will likely struggle... alot. That isnt to say the list would be impossible to beat, especially in a somewhat crowded deployment zone if someone can pop even one of those supers T1 they could potentially wipe a good number of the guardsmen in the explosion.
I think like you said a ranged fight would be a hard matchup, aside from the supers you're looking at an effective range of 24 inches. With only one non-super tank if the enemt is tooled up on anti tank focus firing down the superheavies might not be that much of a challenge either.

Also to point out you have nothing that can really deal with flyers.
Edit: Yeah didn't see your little blurb about weaknesses.

Ah, you make a good point - maybe I should try to shake free some points to buy a pair of Techpriests and some servitors.
Also, even though most of my guns would be out of range on T1, the Baneblade cannon sure won't be

drop the conscirpts and add 10 more guys to your blobs. 40 guy bobs really work better than 30
I also say drop the melta SWS, they are just too fragile to stick around long enough to use them or for them to really land enough hits.

Not sure how I feel about the baneblade addition. Tough to be sure, but can it dish out/contribute more than 2 wyverns and another vet squad (melta or plasma) with transport (either option... for maelstrom). Maybe, but my vote would be no.
Also... with 6 flamers in the platoon squads (and possible additional heavy flamers/flamers in the command squads for cheap), consider the promethium pipe fortification. I took it originally as a "tax" so that I could get 2 void shield generators. IMO, it outperforms a shield generator in almost every game... and for less points. I don't use 2 shield generators anymore and I'm planning to drop the one I usually use. But the pipes are in to stay... a no-brainer if you like flamers. Give it a shot.

With a baneblade to sit back or mid field and Fire away and a knight rushing you're opponent I'm pretty sure most lists have nothing to deal with this kind of list. My buddy has this necron cryptek squad that starts on the board and can deepstrike where ever as its movement and then he has 3-4 other dudes with these haywire guns that usually puts out 12-16 haywire shots a turn. Not sure if youre meta has anyone that uses this but it can certainly take out you're baneblade in one turn. I usually try to have some kind of cover or bla to surround my tanks because of this.
