Subject: WNY Escalation League WAAAAAGH Scrappa Descends! (Play Test Games Up!)
So after Fxeni's fantastic battle report about taking Da Boyz to the Renegade Open, my interest in Orks and 40k as a whole bloomed. I had been taking almost a year hiatus from the game as I had burned out with all the crazy new releases and that my main favorite codex (CSM) had been sacrificed to the most terribly and degrading deaths that Slaanesh had to offer unless you took Heldrakes . This compounded with my friend handing off to me half of the Stormclaw Box means that suddenly the army I swore would be my second is finally mine (and now my 5th army). Now I had been reading and watching all bat reps I could find. Also I have to this date read and listened to more codex reviews than I am proud of, but here I am finally taking part in an Escalation League at WNY Gaming LLC. In Hamburg NY, about an hour from my home. Typically I would not have been attracted to such a long drive except that some of my best buddies live up there and it gives us an excuse to see each other. The narrative is loose but fun and the missions are to help new players learn the game better and be able to play with what they have without getting smashed by min/max lists etc. But on to the mission!
The Mission:
Spoiler:
The mission was a custom one made by the organizer. It was as follows: Players deploy all of their forces by deep strike and scatter as if they were a drop pod. So no mishaps on terrain etc. Players alternate deployment of units "I place you place" style. Then we roll for scatter. After all the deployment and scattering is done, the game can begin. The game also ends on turn 3 to push the action and make things fast to play.
The Objective:
Spoiler:
Hold the bunker in the center of the 4x4 table at the end of the game. You are awarded 1 Campaign Point (CP) for losing, 2 CP for a Draw, and 3 CP for a win. Also for this mission players are awarded with 2 CP for killing a HQ choice and also can gain 2 CP for killing a Monstrous Creature. The most points one person can gain in a night is also capped at 5 Points. This Campaign is more about having fun and telling a story then actually winning and losing.
The Rules:
500 points with lists needing to be Battle Forged. No fliers, FMC's must remain gliding.
My List:
HQ:
Warboss- Cybork armor, Da Lucky Stikk, Da Choppa of Da Ragnarork, Kombi-skorcha
Troops:
23x Boyz, PK Nob with kombi Skorcha
20x Boyz, PK Nob with Kombi Skorcha and boss pole
Game 1:
I played against Jay with his Farsight Enclaves Tau. I do not know his list well, so this is just an approximation:
HQ:
Commander Suit with no weapons, 4x marker drones
Troops:
3x Suits with TL Plasma and flamers
3x Suits with TL Plasma
Initial Thoughts:
Going into this night I was thinking, "Man at 500pts 40 boyz is going to be hard to get rid of! The only things I worry about are IG, Tau and Eldar." Of course my first game will be vs. Tau......So my subtle super sneaky tactic was to get the klaws into combat! Shocker right?! So I wanted to assault and remove some suits while still sitting on that bunker to take it.
(I plan on taking pictures next time)
Deployment
I dropped one squad on the right edge of the bunker in the center of the table and the other mob behind the bunker. Jay dropped his Tau pretty much opposite my orks. All our units scattered minimally.
Turn 1
Spoiler:
Tau Turn 1:
Jay shot up my right hand squad with the warboss in it and killed off 8 Orks, then got a few more shots from his other Suit squad whittling off a few more boyz. He then JSJ'd away. Shocker.
Ork Turn 1:
The 20 boy squad moved closer to the objective as they had scattered back some. The warboss unit WAAAAAGH'd and charged into CC with the suits. The ensuing CC ended with me losing a few orks on the way in and then tieing CC with Tau since Mr. Power Klaw decided that instead of turning on the Klaw he would attempt to strangle the suits with the pull cord.
Turn 2
Spoiler:
color=orange]Tau Turn 2[/color]:
Both the command suit and free squad moved forward to murderfy some more boyz at the objective. In combat Tau actually win combat by 1 but lose a suit from massed choppa attacks. I make my leadership while muttering about possibly getting run down by Tau in CC.....
Ork Turn 2:
The free boyz squad makes it into the bunker with only 2 boyz still hanging out in the open not able to make it inside. I fire off my sluggas and deal one wound. I then figure I might as well charge. I mean the Tau are just gonna shoot me more next turn right? So if I can wrap them up then good for me! I lose 3 or 4 boyz to overwatch and then promptly fail the charge through the "difficult" terrain bunker. In CC my Nob finally figures out that he need to turn his Klaw on and he and the boss along with massed boyz finally finish off the Tau and consolidate to about 14" from the command squad.
Turn 3
Spoiler:
Tau Turn 3:
The 3 man suit unit jump forward within flamer range and burn the Mork out of the boyz. Their weapons dropping the orks to two measly boyz. He then JSJs up to try and cordon off the bunker so that the boyz can't possibly get inside. I rolled morale and somehow these 2 boyz still want to fight!
Ork Turn 3:
So final turn. This is only the 2nd time I've played 7th so I kept double checking about running through terrain. They both stated it's only straight D6. No penalties. So I scooted the two boyz up the edge of the bunker and with a one small die roll hopped them into the bunker to ensure a draw. The other squad moved towards the command squad, intent on picking up that 2 CP for killing his HQ, but failed to charge through terrain (and I forgot about the 'Ere We Go re roll).
Draw for Da Boyz!
Thoughts:
I kinda screwed myself with deployment. That was the one thing I could think of that could have lead to victory. I mean we are playing on a square, why did I deploy back?!?!? I should have put both squads closer to the center. Then the Tau would have had less space and harder target priority since the boyz could kind of support each other. The little 2 boy shuffle at the end made me laugh as I could imagine the two boyz running around the Tau to hop in the bunker yelling, "King of Da Kastle!!!"
Game #2
I played against Jesse with his TAC Blood Angels. He has only played the codex twice and this was my first outing with Orks so if we make mistakes please correct us and excuse our ignorance!
He was running:
HQ:
Librarian with Force staff and plasma pistol
Troops:
5x Tac squad with missile launcher, sarge with plasma pistol
Razor Back with las cannons and HB side sponsons.
5x Tac Squad with las cannon, sarge with plasma pistol
Whirlwind
Initial Thoughts:
When I looked at this list I thought that at 500pts it was quite a bit! It seemed to have a little bit of everything to deal with anything he might come up against! Force staff for MCs, Las cannons for armor, HBs and whirlwind for hordes. However I wasn't sure if he could shift 40 boyz. I mean las cannons are great. But when I'm not getting armor saves anyhow, who cares? I learned from my mistakes last game and deployed da boyz closer together and kept 'Ere We Go in mind.
Deployment:
I chose to deploy second and Jesse dropped his whirlwind close to him in a corner above the bunker. I then plopped a boy squad close to the bunker but toward his Whirlwind. I want none of that pie plate garbage. He then drops the Razorback 5" off the bunker to the right. I then dropped my boyz with the Boss about 8" from my other squad but over to the right a bit more. He then put his Libby tac squad opposite my first squad. Below the bunker and to the right.
Psychic:
Jesse rolls up Blood Boil and then also takes The Quickening. He then promptly takes first turn.
Turn 1
Spoiler:
Blood Angels Turn 1:
Everything opens up. Blood Boil kills 6 orks out of the boss squad and he whittles a few more out from the Razorback, his whirl wind kills 3 from the other boyz mob and 2 from the boss blob.
Orks Turn 1:
Alright, the damage wasn't horrendous, but I don't want to keep eating shots. I push the non boss squad towards the Whirlwind, and take the other squad toward the razorback. I WAAAAAGH for good measure and get the boyz about 7" from the Whirlwind and move the Boss blob into the bunker and 3" from the razorback. I then charge. My boyz make it into the whirlwind and tear it apart. No more of that large blast garbage. I then decide to multicharge the Razorback and libby squad. I lose nothing to overwatch and then roll a 3 for charge. With the -2" for through cover that means that the boyz got no where. I remember 'Ere We Go! But I thought it was reroll both dice, not one. I reroll! 3 again........ Not to mention now that I failed the charge my nob and boss only have 4-5 boyz between then and the storm that is about to hit them.
Turn 2
Spoiler:
Blood Angels Turn 2:
The Razorback disembarks and everyone opens up on them. I am sweating bullets watching my meat shield get whittled away with my nob and Warboss being left open with their little mushrooms waggling in the breeze... Thankfully I get enough cover saves from the right directions that I shrug of the worst of the shooting and only drop 6-7 boyz from various angles.
Orks Turn 2:
I realize I did not always say when I was taking morale checks in their narrative, but i was taking them and I was continually passing them thank Gork! I shuffle up close with my boss blob and move the other boyz back towards the objective. I multiassault the disembarked tac squad and razorback. I lose 2 boyz on the way in but ace the tac squad and razorback. I consolidate back into the bunker.
Turn 3
Spoiler:
Blood Angels Turn 3:
Left with few options Jesse pops force on his staff and casts The Quickening. Making me a little nervous now. He shoots the boyz and charges. He challenges and I feed him my PK nob who is quickly dismantled.
Orks Turn 3:
I try to hustle my final boyz squad into the bunker but they roll light on their run. The Warboss challenges the libby and I grimace. With the quickening he is going before my warboss. Meaning that I could get force sworded out. He gets 1 hit (thank Gork for WS6 with the Stikk) and then fails to wound. However he did get the warlord trait to give him a mastercrafted weapons. So he triumphantly picks up the die and rerolls, failing again. The warboss then proceeds to smash him into the ground with repeated swings of Da Choppa of Da Ragnarork which was only S6 Ap4 at that point. Then the boyz kill the sarge and the rest of the marines allowing them to consolidate into the bunker.
Max Point win for the Orks!
Thoughts:
I think I played it to the best of my abilities and aside from the weird failing a charge on turn 2 went generally in my favor! My only regret is that these points mean jack since the escalation league doesn't technically start until next week....... But as for a first outing with the orks and learning 7th I was generally happy! However I know there is a player running around with a bunch of Firewarriors which concerns me. This mission favors my orks as I get to deep strike But I know it will swing back the other way for the others as well! Like I said, sorry for no photos as making a bat rep series was kind of a after thought. But I will make sure to get some this coming Tuesday! I will also see if I can get a few of the other players to get photos and basic written record of their games.

Warboss Cybork armor, Da Lucky Stikk, Da Choppa of Da Ragnarork, Kombi-skorcha
You haven't said what sort if Detachment you're using, so I'll asdume it's a standard CAD.
Your Warboss isn't legal. You can't take Gifts from both the Codex and the Ghazghkull supplement in the same Detachment, let alone on the same character. There's also a gift limit of one per character.

Thank you for pointing this out. I was using Battlescribe and it doesn't delineate. I'll make the correct changes to it just swapping him to a PK as well. It didn't help me at all so hopefullu it will be no harm no foul. Thank you though!

Nah I have both on my iBooks, I just neglected to do the stupidly easy double check on that... Thanks though! I shall be posting better reports with the correct and legal list on Wednesday!
