So, I'm going to ask a long and vague question.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a campaign badge or some other identifying mark that's both easy to paint and won't stand out on multiple armor colors?
The fluff for my home-brew chapter's 5th company involves the company being nearly decimated by CSM, the numbers dropping to the single digits, forcing the remaining marines and their mortal IG allies to resort to guerrilla warfare for years before reinforcements finally came. I tried thinking of a way to make the survivors, including a librarian and chaplain, stand out among their other brothers, but I can't even think of a color that matches Stormvermin Fur, blue, and black armor, much less a marking or badge, so I came here for help. One idea I had was using the black color scheme that some Imperial Fists used pre-heresy since my chapter is a IF descendant, but black and dark grey don't work as well together in my eyes as black and yellow. Would stand out...while also looking like a completely different chapter.

If anything in that paragraph made no sense, I'm sorry. I shouldn't be writing this near midnight after a long day.

Your idea for your fluff is simple yet good.

My question concerning your story is why the 5th company hasn't been disolved and the survivors integrated in other company ?

As for the badge, you can pain a line on the left (or right) shoulderpad. For the color, I would go for a red (or a yellow to remind of the IF chapter color)

I'm still working on the "Why" part but I'm thinking that the survivors asked to become a part of the new 5th company as it's rebuilt (I imagine that they wouldn't just randomly switch to a 9 company system) after becoming a veteran or specialist. The new captain was an assault veteran sarge whose now deceased squad was attached to the original 5th company, and in recognition of his refusal to surrender in the face of certain defeat and his leadership during those long years, he was given the role of captain. I like the line idea, not sure why I didn't think of it before.

Black and Dark Grey look pretty good to me.

My homebrew chapter is Grey and Yellow and I gotta tell you, it looks pretty good. The Black and Yellow from the Pre-Heresy IF looks great too though. If you did Grey and Yellow though, you could use the IF badge, but just paint the fist outline grey instead of black. Just like how the Crimson Fists badge is red, your's could be Grey. Good luck man!
