There are 6 main races in 40k, and two of them, the Eldar and humans, have split into two main factions.

For the Tau, they have a smaller splinter group, that of Farsight. As for the Orks and Tyranids, they are just beasts and animals.

That leaves the Necrons. What if they were to split into two main factions? What would it be like?

There's already divisions in the fluff. Each dynasty would have its own slight variations. Imperial Armour has a Necron faction (Maynarkh dynasty) where the flayer plague had a tighter hold on that faction (and I think there may have been more destroyers). There's also a tomb world where a solar flare turned the Necrons into the old-fashioned mindless killer robots (the Empire of the Severed). Some Necrons would be interested in biotransference into biological bodies, some would be against it, some Necrons hate life so much they become destroyers, etc, etc. Plenty of diversity.

Most of the Necron dynasties war amongst themselves. Then there's the one that's lost all of its numbers to the Flayer Virus, who just show up and eat flesh, spread their plague, and vanish back into hyperspace.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I read the Op to mean 2 directly opposing sides rather than smaller fights. As he referenced Imperium vs Chaos and Dark Eldar vs Eldar.

Honestly, it could have been written in the old fluff that C'tan that escaped the wrath of the Silent King began seizing worlds in the great sleep and completely wiping the memories of all Necrons that reside. The the other half could be the Silent Kings forces attempting to stop them from wiping the memory of necrons to the Aeons.

The Dynasties are only as disorganised as the DEldar clans or the Chaos warbands.

If you wanted to look at the Necrosn in a schismatic Loyalst vs Chaos, Craftworld vs Dark kind of way, you could put them into four unique factions;

1) Triarch Loyalists, who owe fealty to the Silent King.
2) Imperialists, who owe fealty only to their own Phaeron
3) Sun-wiped and Flayer-kissed, who owe fealty to nobody
4) C'tan Loyalists, who are dominated by their C'tan.

And in true 40k fashion no matter which faction of the Necrons comes out on top unless they can organise bio-transference (or return begging to the C'tan again...) they will all be lost to the Destroyer cult and various viruses over time.

neat. i wonder if necrons want to destroy all organic beings (and hence close off the warp) or find a way to become organic and get their souls back.

Depends. The first you describe is basically the Destroyer Cult. The latter is also a common desire.

Not quite. Destroyers are just mindless... um... destroyers.

Normal necrons dislike the warp cos of their rivalry with the psychic Eldar and their unfamiliarity with chaos.

They exterminate not for exterminating's sake, but to close off the warp and hence end all this magical and sorcerous spookiness.

No, Destroyers are not mindless.

Destroyers are nihilists who hate life and existence. It's a cult.

I stand corrected, but their motives are still distinict from other life-hating Necrons
