Hi Chaps

Been eyeing up Eldar as a secondary army. I have 0 experience with them so basically put together a list of stuff I liked the look of that generally covered most bases. Might be total crap! But as this is a secondary army I am not looking for 100% competitiveness, just something that is functional and looks nice.

Should I consider going Iyanden detachment? I do love me the look of the Wraith stuff. All C&C appreciated.

Highly suggest scatter lasers on the serpents to twin link the serpent shield shots. Upgrading the catapults to canons adds some extra dakka as well.

Banshees are pretty horrible right now. You have them foot slogging, and will get melted off the table before they can assault with any effectiveness. They also suffer initiative penalties for assaulting into terrain making them an even less viable CC unit. To add to to that they do not have access to an assault vehicle makes them less than valuable.

Two spiritseers really aren't needed. I would suggest dropping them, and the Banshees in favor of more bodies. I know you're not looking for 100% competitiveness, but the list is quite lacking even for friendly games.

I might suggest fielding multiple squads of Guardians, or even Dire Avengers on foot to add extra bodies, and volume of fire. Alternatively, Warp Spiders would give you a very mobile unit with a lot of firepower that can be used on a lot of different kinds of targets.

Thanks for the info.

I generally play against marines and crons so wanted some reliable AP3 in there, hence the banshees. Wraiths can handle the AP2.

So if banshees are not all that, what are alternative MEQ hunters which do work atm?

In Assault? Nothing performs particularly well. Maybe Shining Spears (AP3 on the charge)? Striking Scorpion Exarchs can be kitted out well, but that's just one guy. /shrug

Perhaps the best way is just Volume of Fire (particularly with Shuriken weapons).

Another possibility (though risky in terms of points invested) is a Farseer in a large unit of Dark Reapers; if you get Perfect Timing they'll wreck things.

Haven't played since 3rd, but is the general feeling now that 40k is all shoot, no CC?

A lot of people say that, but I highly disagree. Depends if you're talking competitive net listing snooze fests, or more balanced lists that mix units of fun and efficiency.

It's just in the case of Eldar, Banshees have no way of getting to combat safely. They're good when they're their though. Scorpions can do it on foot with a bit more durability, but lack punch. I see Scorps of more an outflanking/infiltrating line-breaker unit to munch weaker back line units anyway. Shining Spears are good, but can be expensive since you will want at least a squad of 6-7. 5 will hit pretty hard, but you need extra dudes so they can get to combat with enough attacks left to be effective.

Dark Reapers can kill MEQs quite well at a nice long distance. Give them starshot and they are dual purpose. Alternatively, more dakka is always a thing. Dire Avengers have a decent effective range with battle focus. Wrap Spiders have an even larger effective range and are good against Armor as well.

Ok so I went completely back to the drawing board with my list and came up with something almost entirely different. I have quite a few heavy hitters in this list combined with "lighter" hitters who can harass. Please let me know if you think this will work well together.

Warlock - Jetbike, Singing Spear

Windrider Jetbikes x 5

Wraithguard x 5 - Wave Serpent w/ TL Starcannon & TL Shuriken Catapults

Fast Attack
Crimson Hunter - Bright Lances x 2
Crimson Hunter - Bright Lances x 2

Heavy Support
Wraith Knight - Suncannon & Scattershield, Scatter Laser

The general idea I have in my head is the Scorpions act as a harassing vanguard, targeting enemy support units. Jetbikes can swiftly follow but also be mobile objective captures. Wraithguard will be closely following heavy hitters combined with the Wraithknight. Crimson Hunters will be targeting enemy AV and flyers.

As always, C&C appreciated.

Crushing Blow is advisable for the Striking Scorpion Exarchs. It doesn't get added before the multiplier, so you cap at S7, but at S7 you wound most gribbly things on 2's or 3's--at Initiative! Can you take a Scorpion's Claw AND a Chainsword? I'm not sure.

Unless you're doing it for personal reasons, there is no way to justify taking TL Star Cannons over TL Scatter Lasers on the serpent.

I suggest you lose one of the Crimson Hunters and use those points to increase to 6 Jet Bikes in each unit, get Shuriken Cannons on the Jet Bikes (2 in each unit) and the serpent, as well as beefing up the Striking Scorpions. If you're going to commit to them, you need to invest enough to make sure they're capable if/when they finally make it into CC.
