Just want to clarify a rule with you guys. If I use the battle cannon on the vengeance weapons battery then does it have to fire at flyers if they are the nearest target (and ultimately miss because they are templates)? My interpretation is that, since its a template weapon, then it cannot hit flyers due to snap fire rules so they choose the next nearest unit that they can legally hit.

VWBs must target the closest unit it can see. It doesn't say closest unit that it can fire at. There is no rule allowing you to target a different unit even if you can't hurt the closest target. So if a flyer is the closest unit then it can only try to fire at the flyer and thus will not fire at all.

Rules for that thing are a mess. You don't "miss" the flyer, you can't even target it.
Must fire at closest vs. can't fire at them.
And if the nearest is in close combat? Or will cause a friendly to be hit?

Personally I'd house rule it as closest legal target.
