This weekend was Adepticon (duh!) and as always it did not disappoint. Outside of catching up with friends, folks.....the sleep deprevation.........alcohol.........countless laughs.......there were some games of 40k squeezed in there.

First up championships.......

My List

Orikan

5 x Immortals
5 x Immortals

9 x Spiders

7 x flayed
8 x flayed
8 x lychguard (warscythes)

3 x scarabs

Mephirat allied CAD

Sezeras

5 x immortals

2 x spyders

Allied formation

6 wraiths
1 spyder
5 scarabs

Soo essentially 12 spyders and a big ball of reanimation protocal wraiths and scarabs.

Game 1 was against Jessie I believe........He had 11 drop pods all full of sisters and blood angels. Most of the squads were melta based, but 3 of the squads were sternguard. This was a nightmare matchup for him as the melta squads couldnt do much damage, so he tried to keep away, but that doesnt win many maelstrom missions. My army spread out like a Canoptek nightmare eating all it touched. Max score of 30 points

Game 2 was against Andy Kopach. It was Kill points/objectives mission and his list was
Draigo, GK Libby, strike squad....2 dreadknights (jumpers with 2 guns) all as a strike force (Deepstrike turn 1)
Scorpion Libby (the 2+ invul save guy) 5 scouts........5 CENTURIANS......then 3 small squads of Inquisitor psykers for warpcharges.....oh and those 2 AV14 lascannon buildings

This was a fun game as we both approached each others armies with caution. As my scarabs grew his centurian star was killing my squads. Andy perriled with the Scorpian Libby....rolled the 1 and removed him as first blood (around turn 2 or 3). Later draigo perriled when casting gate turn 5 and we looked up the result and we noticed Andy could have made a Ld test to keep his Libby alive. The game was very tense strategy wise, but we were having fun. He asked if he could take back the libby so I would lose a kill point and first blood. I was really torn here......so I said lets dice off. Andy won the dice off and took the Ld and passed. He put the libby back on the board. Now I was in trouble, we then finished the gate jump and the Centurian star scattered into my army and mishapped. They were thrown back into reserves and it was last turn due to time. Andy's heart sank as it not only kept a unit or two of mine alive, but cost him 2 KP plus a point for doing 3 wounds to a LOW. What a swing of emotions in about 2 minutes. Then we couldnt figure out who got first blood so we diced off and I won the roll. Final score Tie 15-15.

I know this game didnt sound very by the book, but as long as both players can work things out I dont mind a little give and take. That was a really fun game, hopefully any Adepticon judges reading this dont mind we were a little loosey goosey with takebacks.

Game 3. Maelstrom - Hammer and Anvil. My worst mission. Opponent ---- Lt. Dan from Canada. Dan was a pleasent guy to play against. His list wasnt though.

Fateweaver

2 x 11 horrors

2 heralds of Tzeentch w/ screamerstar

Herald of Nurgle with Plaguedrone blob

Herald of Khorne w/ Fleshhounds (15 or so).

Essentially his army came up and hugged mine. Between invisibility, and the book......I couldnt get anything away from his army till late in the game, letting Dan grab a few maelstrom card lead. I did not have time to recover taking a 24-6 loss. Ouch! I bought Dan a beer for kicking my butt, and as a bonus, my friend Kohl walked up and bought us Jaegerbombs as we were grabbing our beers. Fun game, just a tail kicking though.

Game 4 . I fought Will who was at his first Adepticon. He said he was doing the friendly the next day and I was filling him in on all the past friendly tourney antics trying to hype it up a little for him. Side note....I saw Will on Saturday and he had such a good time at the friendly on Fri. he said not a chance he would miss next year. Ok...back to the battle.

Wills list.

Dechurian detachment.
3 x 3 T.blades
Overlord all pimped out
warriors in ghost ark and large blob of 15 warriors
5 immortals in scythe
2 maxed out wraith canoptek harvests.

Well looks like a taste of my own Necron medicine. Mission was objectives and killing fast and Heavy choices.

The game became 2 giant melee blobs that could not kill each other. The tide turned as the flayed ones got into one fo the wraithballs creating a late game break out where I was able to contest his objectives and move my objective secured units to my 3 objectives giving me a 30-0 win. We had a good game...laughed, talked about our real world lives, you know....like we were normal folks.

When the dust settled I netted 81 points, but it took 85 I believe to get in the top 32. I was just a few points shy, and I was not going to play in the final round of the championships. It was a mixed blessing as I love to get to play against great 40k players and I would miss my chance, but it meant I didnt have to cram in 4 games on friday so I could get a bit of rest.

When all scores were added in....battle points, painting scores, good looks etc.....I was in 29th overall. I was happy with how I played and had a blast.

Friday I was going to take the day off when the tourney organizer of the Highlander tourney had someone go to the hospital so they needed someone to fill in. My brother had most of what I needed to play (since he was legitamitly in the tourney) so i had no army. The tourney organizer let me borrow his Eldar which won best painted at last years Adepticon. those minis were awesome to play with.

Impromptu Highlander Bonus game.

My list

Wave serpant (brightlance....+1 coversave) w/ 10 warriors
1 unit of 9 jetbikes
Farseer on foot
Spiritseer on foot
10 wraithguard w/ S10 guns.
6 Swooping Hawks
9 warp spiders
6 Dark reapers
10 more guardians on foot.

Technically an illegal list I think, but we only had so many minis to make the list from.

I was going to play Theo who I had fought before, and he was a good sport then, and a great sport this game. He helped me with a few Eldar pointers during our game.

Theo had

Lynx
Falcon w/ dire avengers
Serpent w/ guardians
Wraithknight
Crimson hunter
Anti psyker assassin.

Theo won first turn. Oh yeah, mission was KP and objectives. Theo took first turn so I put the whole army in reserve. (warlord trait was 3 units gain infiltrate so I put the wraithguard and hq's on an outflank mission or I was never going to get near the Lynx.

So I deploy the lonely Wave serpant in the corner with guardians inside....nothing else. First shot was the Lynx and...........Boom..........Hold on hold on let me just say up until now I have fought the Lynx many times....including my last game against Theo and I was bragging how I had never lost so keep that in mind.........ok ok...........First shot was the Lynx and BOOM!!!!!! he sixed me blowing the serpent sky high. Only 5 guardians survive the explosion. If he tables me turn 1 this will be the shortest game I have ever played. I manage to keep one little guardian alive due to LOS. Scwew. The rest of the game was me running and hiding and making heroic saves. The wraithknight got into melee with my HQ's and a lone Wraithguard (the Lynx messed them up also). Theo couldnt hit for 3 rounds of melee and with fleshbane I had wounded the knight 4 times!!. The assassin finally got within 12" and my psyker defenses (fortune) quickly went away. My two HQs became grease stains under the Wraithknights shoes.

We tied on objectives but I was way behind on kill points. The game was a lot of fun and it was great getting to run such an awesome painted army. I guess Eldar aarent so easy to play after all, and I can no longer act like a bigshot about not fearing a Lynx. Another good note, the gentleman came back from the hospital......although that I wasnt needed to play but now I could float around the championship games and live vicariously through the top 40k players.

I will post our team games later.

Great report dude! I enjoyed the read.

I'm going to the UK throne of skulls this June and it'll be my first competitive tournament for over a year, reports like this are helping me get back into the swing of it all, thanks.

Hey,

I played you first round. Yeah that was an awful match up for me, it didn't help that every card I drew for the first three turns was something like kill 3 units in shooting or kill a character.

Anyway nice job on almost making the finals.

Not sure why they would: You resolved disagreements amicably and fairly. Sounds like...Sportsmanship!

Yeah i can only concur here.

That's exactly the way that the game should be played.

Kudos to you

The deamon game essentially broke down as follows. We drew maelstrom cards turn 1 and I could not accomplish mine....so I discard. Next turn my opponent gets 3 pts. I draw....kill Fateweaver (warlord).....and score one of the objectives in my deployment zones....deep in the deployment zone. I drew score the same objective again. Now I could only discard 1 of those and then I was playing catch up.

At one point Dan was probably up 12-13 pts, and finally I was able to start drawing some cards I could accomplish, closing the gap to 9. We compare the +9/-9 to 15 and you get 24-6.

Now its not all in the cards, I had some options here.

1. I could have taken Zahndreh in my list ESPECIALLY since I knew mealstrom was an aspect of missions going into the tourney. Nearly did, and I could have discarded 2 mission cards...forced my opponent to discard....etc....

2. I had flayed ones to deepstrike for the hammer and anvil mission, but I thought I would need them to fight through the wall of deamons. As it turns out they didnt do much to invisible flesh hounds. I should have kept a unit to deepstrike, maybe both. Of course that's with hindsight, I had no idea what I would draw, but I could have taken a deepstriking unit knowing anything could have been drawn.

Now for the team tourney.

Our Lists
Orikan, Zahndrekh, Sezeras, veil tek
15 Spyders
12 Wraiths
50 Immortals (all guass and on foot)
20 warriors (same)
piles of scarabs
some misc. melee units

Roughly split equally in 4 lists

Round 1

Our opponents were all 4 biker based lists.

My opponents were John (who had made the top 32 with orks in the championships) and Simon. Simon is a local (to me) player that I have not yet had the chance to play.

This game was a lot of fun. Simon and John were really fun to play against, great sports, and we had a hard fought game that boiled down to lots of ork biker vs scarabs and spyders melees. Flayed ones ripped through 30 boys in 2 melee phases, and it netted my brother and I a 17-13 win. Not much better that a draw , getting the edge by blowing a trukk with a scarab swarm for first blood. John and Simon did a good job of playing the mealstorm cards well, using every one of their units to net them 4 late game points. A really fun game.

Our teammates were not so fortunate taking a tough 24-6 loss with the biker units getting a large upper hand.

Game 2.
We stroll up to the table to face 4 more ork lists. These lists had lots of bikes as well, but this time instead of being complimented by lots of charchters with fists, they had an awesome looking Imperial Knight with their army. Scott and Jesse were our opponents names and their team theme was big game hunters, so they all had hunting vests and cammo hats. They were really good guys to play against, and the Imperial knight almost won the game for them stomping Orikan and all 6 wraiths dead in 2 melee phases.....but the 9 Spyders smashing were able to chew the hull points off of it sending it nuclear. The scarab swarm rules the day as well as all of our infantry shooting, netting us 30-0 wins on both tables.

Game 3. Dou you know what a Typhon is? I didnt going into this games. In the whispers of 40k I had heard of scary S10 ignore cover blasts......but I had never faced such a weapon. Untill I saw the Typhon. Its also AP1 and a 7" pie plate. Yikes. To support this chassis of doom our opponents had Kassaro, a command squad, and 30-40 bikers/attack bikes....oh and a Sicaran Battle Tank.

I forget our opponents names, but they were also a lot of fun to paly agianst. They played their army well, and dealt a lot of damage to us, but they were very fair and really good sports about any changes of fortune our armies would have. We had a chance to hit the Typhon with a scarab swarm, but we missed the 8" charge, even with Fleet. When the smoke cleared is was a hard fought 15-15 tie. Great game. Our teammates managed to pull out a 17-13 win. All in all day 1 was a blast, and it was off to dinner with another team from our area (Madison, WI). I watched my brother suck the brain out of his first Lobster. Jason, (one of my other teammates) did the same. The waiter was explaining how good sucking on the nerves was. Yuck!! I was happy with my Fish and chips. We had plenty of laughs, tails of glory, and booze.......and to bed before day 2.

As a bonus we were asked to re-set up our board for display in the Hallway. I was very happy for my Brother (as he was responsible for the board), and it was an honor to be asked to display our army. We were very excitied about that as well.

2 more games before the weekend was over.
