Lister, Rimmer, Kryten and Cat will be returning in two more series of Red Dwarf, Dave has announced.
Red Dwarf XI and Red Dwarf XII begin production this autumn and are due to air on the channel in 2016 and 2017.
The last time fans were treated to fresh episodes of the cult sci-fi comedy was in 2012 with the six-part Red Dwarf X, a follow-up to 2009's Red Dwarf: Back to Earth, Dave’s first foray into scripted comedy commissions.

Back to Earth saw more than 2.6 million viewers tuning in to catch up with the four hapless space explorers as they returned to the small screen for the first time since the BBC series ended a decade earlier.

Red Dwarf first landed in 1988 on BBC2. It's eighth and final series on the BBC brought in more than eight million viewers, while the show has sold over 11.5 million DVD and videos worldwide, been broadcast in 25 countries and won International Emmy and British Comedy Awards.

Co-Produced by Grant Naylor Productions and Baby Cow Productions, Red Dwarf XI and XII are written and directed by co-creator Doug Naylor. The series once more reunites Chris Barrie as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister, Danny John-Jules as Cat and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten.

Doug Naylor said: “Everyone at UKTV have been so supportive of Red Dwarf from the start of their involvement with the show... [they] originally asked for more shows back in 2012 but frustratingly it’s taken until now to get our ducks in a row and all the boys available at the same time. Now they are, we’re all absolutely delighted.”

Simon Lupton, UKTV's commissioning editor, added: “Red Dwarf has superb talent attached; writing, directing and acting plus an expert team who absolutely know what they are doing when it comes to delivering a stand-out piece of television. It has a universal appeal that manages to touch long-standing fans and recruit new ones. It is fantastic to be collaborating with them again on the next phase of the Red Dwarf adventure.”

Marvellous!

Wow, good stuff, hugely enjoyable back in the day.
Wonder how they've all aged? Last I saw of Lister he was doing commentary on Robot Wars circa 2000

You've not seen Red Dwarf X, then? It was made in 2012 by the same people that are doing these new series, and was pretty good despite them all being a lot older. Not quite as good as the original series 3-5 days, but still worth watching.

They're all on YouTube if you haven't seen them.

Can they not just let red dwarf die. The original series was amazing, and one of the funnier shows I've watched, but the new ones look and feel sad, as if no on noticed around 20 plus years have occurred

This could be bad, and this could be good. I guess it depends on who is writing it.

Doug Naylor is writing/directing it all, as he did with the last series. I think it's in safe hands!

Perhaps it could be something designed to pass the torch to a new generation.

Hopefully the story will deal with the fact that they all look like what they are, middle aged men. Thirty years alone in space madness kind of stuff.

I was never a fan of Red Dwarf but I think it deserved more attention than I ever gave it, and catch-up TV will let me recoup that situation.

That said, there is a time that everything must pass away. If you watch "Death In Paradise" it is a shock to realise that Sgt. Dwayne Myers is played by the same actor as plays Cat in Red Dwarf. He looks so much older!

Anno Domini comes to us all, of course, but in a fictional drama the passage of time hopefully will be reflected realistically and the millions of years old RD ship should be laid to rest.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

This is great news!

All four main cast characters - tick!

Grant/Naylor at the helm - tick!

No Kachanski - tick!

Sorted.

RdX was a good enough return to form, a two series commission should be enough time for them to get a decent plot down rather than monster of the week japes every week.

I didn't have a proble with the aging thing in that I don't see it being a problem in XI am XII.

What happened to series 9? I only realised after seeing this news that it went 1-8,X, XI, XII. Was it planned and then canned or were Dave just trying to be quirky?

Series 9 was the "Back to Earth" mini Series on Dave.

It was alright but let down by the end.

Series nine is the two "Back to Earth" specials. We don't talk about those...

I feel ten was a good return, not as good as the early stuff, but better than 7 and much better than 8. I would say it is as good as 4, 5 and 6. I have no problem with them aging. It's not like they are trying to pretend they are still the same age, after all they are stuck on Red Dwarf. Lister and Cat will age, I just assume holograms have aging built in as they can't hang around for ever and makes people feel better (the same explanation they use for why mechanoids don't look human. It freaked people out). Kryten shouldn't age, but I am willing to overlook the bit of middle aged spread round the waste and under the chin.

Ah, the one where they end up on Coronation street? I assumed that was part of X somewhere (I've only rewatched episodes 1-2 so far).

Mystery solved.

Like the man said, we don't talk about those! . To be fair, there are a few good gags in there, it's just the premise that really bugs me.

I believe there was also a line in BTE where a kid from the universe where RD is a TV series (ie ours) talks about Series 9, with a throwaway line about Kochansky leaving, hence her (thankful) absence in X.

On another note, at least one of these new episodes needs Ace Rimmer back...
