So, I've been bit pretty hard by the 30K bug, and I'm in the process of working out an actual list, order in which I'm going to buy and paint models, etc, when I came across this dilema: I don't really know at what point value it becomes viable to field a primarch in my force.

I've got a Death Guard army in mind, so I'd be fielding Mortarion, and I definitely don't think he'd be worth fielding in a 1500-2000 point game due to his cost, though those aren't particularly army sizes you see a lot in 30K to begin with.

So, that's it. Any help is appreciated, and I'll also take any tips you have on playing the army itself if you have them.

You can field a primarch at 2k.. but it feels like a bit of an army crutch. Fits better in 2.5k /3k.

Below 2k I wouldn't recommend.

The problem with adding a primarch at low levels is the necessity to base a large portion of your list to getting him to combat, I haven't seen one that can deepstrike or infiltrate so automaticaly your looking at around 1000 points just devoted to him, hid transport and his guards. So for a game to be worthwhile for you and your opponent (unless he is also fielding a primarch) is to wait until you have about 3000 points each
