Tau Setup:
Necron 1 - Nothing to really report, moved, killed some guys, horrendous rolls for moving through terrain forced me to run 2 units. Flayed Ones outside of
LOS ran to get near the Warriors. I probably should've gone after the Devilfish for
FB, but decided the OS Warriors the better target, they lived.
Tau 1 - With the Flayed Ones on the Flank, he poured an INSANE amount of firepower from Fire Warriors, Riptide, 2 of the Broadside spams to kill just 9 of the Flayed Ones for First Blood. He poured the rest of the shots into the other unit of Flayed Ones, and Tomb Blades. Left me with 1 Flayed One and 3 of the Tomb Blades.
Necron 2 - I start the push for the objective, a turn too soon I think. Warlord Trait switched to 'Target Priority' and shooting all the Fire Warriors, all day long. Unit 3 survived but broke and ran 11". With 'First Blood' gone, I had the lone Flayed One rage at the Devilfish. Just a bunch of sparks.
Tau 2 - The real fight begins and the pain starts. He moved the Devilfish up to near the objective, and the drones from there were remarkably left alone. The main squad of Warriors with Zahndrekh in them took the solidified brunt of the the shooting, dropping them to 3 man squad. The Warriors rally and manage to pick off a single Warrior. Tau were happy with that.
Necron 3 - I take control of the Center, with Zahndrekh jumping to the 2nd 20 man unit of Warriors, and keeping 'Target Priority'. I fired at some Broadsides and killed some Drones. I made another bad gambit by hoping to charge the Riptide with the Flayed One soaking the Overwatch, and the Tomb Blades going in after. The Flayed One got popped off by the Riptide, so the Broadsides were able to get the supporting fire in on the Tomb Blades. One survived. This is the hilarious part, he put a Wound on the Riptide from Hammer of Wrath, then promptly died.
Rules Question: If the Flayed One had managed to make it in to base with the Riptide, would the Broadsides still be able to fire the Overwatch? Neither of us knew, but it's something we'd like to know for the future.
Tau 3 - Game took a sharp turn for me. The Small 3 man unit on the Objective were wiped out. Zahndrekh started soaking shots with his 2+. Once he got down to 1 Wound, I started '
LoS' off. The first barrage from the second unit of Broadsides and I fail the
LoS, Save,
RP all with 1's, then fail the
RP on a 2+ with THAT re-roll. So the rest of the shots dropped my 2nd block to around 9 models, and then they broke and ran... Still have 1 unit of Warriors on the Flank and 2 units of Immortals at this point.
Necron 4 - Warriors rallied, but out of range and couldn't run, so they just sat there. With 6 Fire Warriors so far from the objective, I finally started to lay into the Broadsides. Lots of the Drones going down really helped me in the end, but Casualty removal came a bit me in the arse. I had the one unit of Warriors on the side, charge, but because there was a single Drone withing 6" of the far Broadside squad (even with coherency broken), they took a brutal beating. Still had 11 left and made an 11" charge to tie up the Broadsides. They would remain in
CC for the remainder of the game.
Tau 4 - Saw the 3rd unit of Warriors disappear into Dust. His Riptide wasn't doing so well having failed a few Overcharges and/or Gets Hot rolls he was down to 2 Wounds. We had a brief discussion and he realized that I didn't have ObSec troops, so with First Blood and Slay the Warlord he wasn't out of the game yet, so he started playing it safe for a last turn push.
Necron 5 - Crunch time. The last unit of Immortals moves in and picks up the Objective. I put 4 Immortals closer to his remaining Broadsides, killed a few more drones. I did manage to use that downed Devilfish to block
LoS from some of the Broadsides. The other Unit of Immortals moved to the center to work on the Broadsides with the most drones.
Tau 5 - The gambit worked. Riptide spank's himself again. The loss of
LoS, meant he could only kill 3 of the Immortals with the direct fire, and not the one holding the Objective. Add that to the number of Drones that were no longer around, and I only lost a single Immortal from that unit.
Rolled a 5 for the game to continue!
Necron 6 - Despite my opponent needing the game to go on, it didn't go well. The Immortal with the Relic moved back 6" with the rest of the unit up front. The other unit moved over to deal with it in assault if they needed to, since he was now outside 6" so wouldn't have any overwatch support. The Relic holding Immortals put a few wounds on the Riptide, but he made the
FnP roll on his one failed save. The Warriors managed to finish him off. The leaving the other unit of Immortals to shoot more Broadsides. I ignored the Fire Warriors, because they had to get through 9 Immortals and 9 Warriors to even get close to the objective.
Tau 6 - Final Gambit. His only chance to win was to get those Immortals. He poured every shot he had into them, killing 2. The game rested on the Break Test, which I passed with a 9. Even I was stressed out because we didn't know if the game would end.
Rolled a 6 for the next round and the game went on. We called it at this point, because the Immortals would've moved out of range of the Broadsides, with the other unit going into assault the largest unit. 1 unit of Broadsides wouldn't kill that many Immortals after moving, so we shook hands.
I have had quite a few people ask me how I deal with Tau, and since I had my Tablet with me, he agreed to let me do the Batrep. I did lose some of pictures by deleting the wrong ones, so I ended up with a few pics where all it showed was where I moved, and not what I did to him.
All in all a very good game. Once he didn't do much to my center on Turn 1 (by going after those Flayed Ones), we both kind of knew he had more of an uphill fight. The first struggle simply being the model count. I don't normally run a Decurion for
EW missions, but this was a last minute game and I didn't take much time to grab the right models. My opponents have wizened up to Flayed Ones, and this is starting to be a trend where they don't actually see combat. I'll admit that the sheer number of
RP rolls I made on the first unit was well above average, they still did their job. 'Hey, we're coming to kill you!' 'Oh No, shoot them' <Sneak on Objective>. The Tesla Immortals also were ahead most of the game as well, each unit averaging 2-3 6's generating a ton of shots, and getting the wounds. He got above average Saves most of the time, but only against the Tesla. I guess they knew to put shielding on the drones to stop from being shorted out.
I learned quite a bit, and I finally have some experience against the Egg-Carton spam missile sides. I don't think it's too bad, until you get to the Overwatch bit. It's just a crap ton of shooting when you try to assault. Not trying to downplay it, I COMPLETELY get why everyone hates it, and the only way I got away with it was because of
RP. So don't flame me with stupid 'Well that's because you're Necrons...' comments. It was made even more difficult because I couldn't cross-fire to have an impact on that because of the Hammer and Anvil Deployment. Killing those Drones is often enough, at least for me, to slow his shooting down, and should work when I play my other armies. I did laugh when he actually said he wished the stronger missiles had a higher
AP. Really? (I joke, he's been a great opponent for both our games!)
He's not on Dakka yet, but I've invited him to join here, so he'll have his own comments to add later as well.
