OK...here we go again.

According to Bols,
5 – Final Decomposition: WC2. Focussed Witchfire, Range 12″, S*, AP2, Assault 1, Ignores Cover, Instant Death, Internal Liquefaction (*Do not roll To Wound. Instead, roll a D6 – if the result is higher than the number of Wounds the target has remaining, it suffers 1 Wound with the profile above.) Does not affect vehicles.

is one of the new Nurgle powers. Like Psychic Shriek, it is a witchfire that does not explicitly state that it rolls to hit, and gives an alternate method of wounding, apparently not requiring "hitting".

So.

Roll to Hit, Yes or No? If we roll to hit, do we ignore the results?

If you believe this power should be resolved differently than Psychic Shriek, please justify the difference.

The only difference I see is the "Assault 1" statline. Is this enough to justify rolling to hit?

Fight begins in 3...2...1...

The obvious difference is it actually has a weapon profile.

I think if psychic shriek was worded as a range 18" S* Ap2 assault 1 then there would not be nearly as many arguments about it.

As it is the wording on psychic shriek is unlike any other witchfire I know of and leads to confusion. All the other witch fires have a profile. I don't have my book on me but I think even the lines and nova's have profiles.

As it is you read psychic shriek reads more like a malediction, but then has the word witchfire thrown in.

But seriously we don't need need to have another huge discussion on psychic shriek. Having a shooting profile vs not having a shooting profile is an obvious difference.

This power rolls to hit, and we know the number of dice to use. And, as it has a roll to wound step, contingent on the number of successful hits, we know how many dice to roll to wound as well.

NOthing at all like Psychic Shriek

Why wouldn't you roll to hit with it.

It's a witchfire, it's even assault 1, there is no argument to be made for not rolling to hit.

Yeah, it says Assault 1, which tells us exactly how many shots the power makes. Each of those shots rolls to hit and to wound using the Internal Liquification special rule.

By comparison, Psychic Shriek, Mind War, Mirror of Minds... those powers don't have a shooting profile. They just state what occurs to the target. Hence the confusion (which I personally believe to be no-hit required).
