Void shields protect from "shooting attacks" that originate further than 12" away. If a unit has some models within 12", and some further than 12" and are targetting an enemy that is protected, do you check to see if the shooting unit hits the shield by unit, or by model?

You determine if the void shield coverage by unit. If part of the unit is within 12" of the VSG then the whole unit gets to shoot ignoring the VSG. Just like when if part of the unit was within 12" of the VSG the whole unit gets protected by the VSG.

This is my default position as well, and this is how I played it...but aren't the shooting attacks of the models outside the shield originating from outside the shield? Here's a complication: I have a unit of two Kataphron servitors. One is 11" away from the building, and therefore within the zone. One is 14" away and thus not within the zone. Both have grav cannons. The closer one has a flamethrower. The farther one has a phosphor blaster. I have three weapon groups. Do the phosphor blaster shots hit the shield or ignore it? Does all the grav ignore the shield, or just half of it?

I always thought you determined it by weapon group.

This is spot on, there was a long thread a few weeks ago that went over the intricacies of why the VSG affects whole units that are only partially within it, and isn't an exact 12" bubble.
