Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency in Houston after record rainfall claimed five lives.
Meteorologists said some 17.6in (44.7cm) of rain fell on Houston on Monday alone, levels national officials said were "historic".
Rivers burst their banks in downtown Houston and 1,200 people were rescued from rising floodwaters.
Close to 70,000 people were left without power in the city, the fourth-largest in the United States.
At least 1,000 homes have flooded, with the number likely to rise. City officials have turned a large shopping centre into an evacuation centre.
As well as telling people not to drive in the fast-flowing waters, city officials warned against allowing children to play in waters that are likely to contain snakes and ants.
Among the worst-hit areas is Greenspoint, a poor, mainly Hispanic district of more than 112,000 people to the north of the city centre.
Footage broadcast in Texas showed Greenspoint families moving belongings and children through floodwaters on air beds and inside a refrigerator.
The various stories and pictures are heartbreaking, very sad.
Hope any and all Dakkanauts and their families etc are all safe. And dry.

Yeah, it's pretty rough. Still have thousands without power. We were bailing water yesterday to keep it out of the house. Still have some flooded roads, but at least most stuff is passable. Flooded roads is terrible when disabled/elderly homebound housing floods.
Supposed to rain again today :-/.

I lived in Houston in 2000 when Allison hit. It was seriously rough. I lived right on the Bay and the flooding was extreme.
Good luck to all down there.

You should get yourself a walking house. Next time flood waters start rising, just run for the hills in your house. No packing needed.

Did wonder, but then figured you'd just add rum to taste and be alright

Stay safe Dakkanaughts.
When UT wins a game they light up the tower Longhorn orange, but to a non-Longhorn it looks like a giant temple to the Blood God.
The city is designed to take a major hurricane, with major roads reopening within 24 hours. Most of that has occurred. If we can scate without more material rain in the next day or two, everything should be good. The bayou that overflowed in Greenspoint is back below its banks. Unfortunately Cypress and Little Cypress (where I am at) are still rising and won't crest until today in some areas.
Its weird to see a fanboat rescuing people, in what you know is a neighborhood park.

Yes indeedy. Look at the chart on the right. It was a "1,000 year" flood. Cattle were up to their knees in the water across the street. But its receding, albeit on a geologic pace.
