One of the lists I've come up with has 30 Vanguard in it: 21 Radium Carbines and 9 Plasma Calivers.
(Only a 750 bracket, so comes with a suited Onager with an Erad Beamer)

I got fed up trying to gun down a bunch of elite Marines and Inquisitor with my Rangers, seeing as it just wasn't happening. Neutron lasers are damn handy for it, but for my little gubbinzes running around getting objectives and such keep getting ruined by Marines, partly because I'm getting so unlucky with rolls, partly because I just don't have the power to handle the cheese.

So before I actually go ahead and use this list, most likely against Necrons next, is it actually a good idea, or am I going to get ham blasted?

Vanguard are good you'll make them make a lot of saves, hopefully he'll fail a few. I love vanguard, point for point they're devastating once they get in range. The -1 toughness is good too.

I think they are great if you have some transport to ferry them into 18inch from the enemy. So Droppod or Rhino from allied Marines looks mandatory. But they are glass cannon units, so don't expect them to survive after they fired their shots...

I actually tinkered with a list that was something along the lines of 2 Dominus Maniples with Vanguard, then 20 more vanguard, 30 Rangers, and a Knight. It actually didnt do too bad but it needs some major tweaking. It just came down to a lot of hardy bodies for the enemy to deal with, although I was lacking a great deal of ranged weapons.

Seeing as 1 of the 10-man squads costs 200 points, perhaps it's a better idea to swap one for a unit of Infiltrators (with Tasers, Digi Weps, and a Refractor field), just for that synergy against melée fights?

Well, you don't have to max out on special weapons just because you can. a single 10 man squad of vanguard is just 100pts after all! I suggest maybe just adding one plasma in a squad, but if you want to go all out I can say arc rifles are friggen awesome for piling on even more wounds and making the vanguard a "jack of all traits" type of unit. they could kill land raiders if you get close enough to them, or have two squads blasting away at maximum range while you close with them.

"Do you really think 7th edition was the best edition?"

"Yes, and I'm tired of thinking otherwise."
