Hello Dakka! Long time lurker here.
A good buddy of mine plays using Codex: Chaos Space Marines with some forgeworld stuff thrown in. He has been throwing Kharn in a unit of unmarked Chosen and also adding a Chaos Lord with a MoN and the palanquin thing. But I thought you couldn't mix and match chaos marks in a single unit. I was under the impression that when an IC joins a unit he is in fact considered part of the unit until he leaves the unit in the movement phase. Meaning that differently marked character then couldn't join. His argument is that since the Chosen aren't marked that means he can join multiple different marks to them. Any help you all can provide would be much appreciated!

Not sure about the RAW for this one. But I would say that it at least not in line with RAI

By raw it doesn't work. The unit has a mark, just like if the unit had 1 guy with a melta gun you'd say the unit has a melta gun.

Yes, but marks are special rules, not weapons.

Do characters pass special rules onto the units they join?

It doesn't matter if the character passes the mark to his unit or not because the clause that would prevent a differently marked IC from joining the unit isn't checking if the entire unit has the mark.

Mark of Chaos is an upgrade purchased by the unit. I quote: "The unit may purchase one of the following Marks of Chaos:"

The rule doesn't say "may not join a unit containing a model with a different Mark of Chaos", it says "may not join a unit with a different Mark of Chaos". Mark of Chaos isn't conferred from the iC to the unit, and the IC becomes a member of the unit for all rules purposes, not the other way around. The unit it's a member of is unmarked, so there's nothing (in my reading) preventing another IC with a different mark from joining the unmarked squad.

Gave it some tough and I am with CrowAxe on this one.

Does this unit ( that happens to include a IC that is part of the unit for all intents and purposes) contain a different mark of chaos -> Yes, so the other IC can't join.
