Hello and sorry for these noobish questions you folks do end up seeing quite often here, but a noob needs to learn. I was at first into the hobby not so much into the game. But I have found people to play with so I've been trying to crawl out of that noob hole

I do know you can paint your army whatever color, etc. But there is the what you see is what you get rule so. I am pointing to you Farsight Enclave army and other color specific things out there! Or should be? I just want to be clear of things before I enter a GW store and make a big silly fool of myself. . . Which I'll do anyways!

But yes, Farsight. He's a sore thumb in my current army scheme color. So I want to make sure if I can paint some models there and there Enclave colors and be A-Okay using them as Tau.

I mean I assume you can as long as from the start of the game you say 'These are just Tau.' Right folks?

Paint is generally consideder an exception to the WYSIWYG ethos - it's more important to be able to tell what weapons a crisis suit (for example) is equipped with, or tell which marine in a unit has the plasma gun etc.

If you see a suit with a great big sword, a plasma rifle and a shield, it should be obvious it's Farsight (or a home-made character using his rules) regardless of what colour he is.

In the age of multiple detachments granting different rules, generally if you are using more than one detachment it's a good idea being able to tell them apart, but how you do that is up to you.

These red Tau are just red Tau who like the color red, not Farsight Tau. Problem solved.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
