I'm thinking about purchasing one of the awesome FW Knights, and I'm unsure of which one to pick. I really like the Castigator, but the Lancer and the Acheron are both appealing as well. I've looked over their rules, but I'm still unsure. What are your opinions? As an aside, how difficult are they to assemble? I've built some FW products, but only infantry sized things (all reasonably simple), a Deimos rhino (very easy), and a Spartan Assault tank (which was a pain in the butt)

I have an Acheron myself. While it has yet to see a game, I am seriously looking forward to its first. I am curious though, as to how the hellstorm will work for overwatch if it is in a baronial court.

The question is, which is superior? The Baronial Court's Overwatch or the Household Detachment's Objective secured for a 3 knight lance?

The kits go together fairly easily. The only real issue I've had is remembering to measure before gluing the legs into a position too narrow for the pistons to fit into.

Of course it depends on what you're facing a lot of the time.

Generally, from the ones you've mentioned, I'd say a castigator. It's the best all-rounder. It's ranged attack is rather decent against both MEQ targets and light/medium vehicles.

It's not Str D in melee, so you should probably keep it away from other knights, but it's VERY good against anything else. It cannot be tarpitted by blobs unless you're making extremely tactical plays.

The lancer is your go-to knight if you're dealing with lots of enemy super-heavies, especially tanks. The fact that it gets a 5+ invul in close combat definitely gives it an edge over other things that strike back.

Archon is more expensive than Castigator and Lancer, but everything about it screams "meh" unless you're somehow facing an army that's compromised out of a blob of MEQ's and Land raiders.

If I can recommend a knight that's not on your list, it's the Atrpos. Again, very decent all-rounder with a Str 8 AP2 armourbane large blast. Will cut a hole in anything you need it cut in (+ID on T4). On top of that, there's a chance at vortexy goodness (which, in 7th counts as Str D). More vulnerable to tarpitting than the Castigator, but it's got D in melee so it's a bit better against other super-heavies.
It's Ionic flare is nothing to sneeze at, having played with it myself, I can say it is definitely one of the strongest rules a knight can have depending on what you're facing. For example, I regularly face Tau and if I put my Knight Styrix on the table (which also has the shield), I can quite confidently say it is getting of the table in one piece, simply because of the flare shield.
Finally, I think it got the best looks.

You're talking about a pretty serious chunk of change...don't leave your decision up to the internet. We, as a rule, suck.

Thanks for the feedback all.

I think I'm going to go with the Castigator. My Knight list right now is 2 Gallants, a Crusader, and a Paladin, so I think another "all round" type would fit well.

I'd still like to hear any feedback about the effectiveness of the other types of Knights, if anyone has anything else to share, particularly in the context of a 30k Questoris Knight army. Building towards this is my eventual goal

I love my castigator. It also has the bonus of not having the 'big scary strength D' that people don't like.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

The Atrapos. Accept no substitutes.

The Castigator is okay, but it is only really good against infantry hordes. Most normal armies should already be plenty capable of dealing with basic infantry, making the Castigator superfluous in most (non-IK) lists. The only place where the Castigator really shines is in dedicated IK lists (who can sometimes struggle dealing with hordes).
However, the Acheron is also primarily an anti-infantry weapon (though the chainfist deals with all vehicles very well too) and I would prefer it over the Castigator because it ignores cover and has an additional ranged weapon.

So for your IK list I would go for an Acheron over a Castigator. I would take the Atrapos if you also want to use the Knight outside of IK lists (I would go for an Atrapos anyway, but I am just really a huge fan of it )

Of course, the very most important consideration is what model you like the look of best. I really can't stress that enough, because if you buy something expensive like a FW Knight because of the rules, while you actually like a different one better, you will likely have some feelings of regret later on.

I was in your shoes with wanting a Castigator but eBay has yielded a lancer and Acheron for me instead.

I don't see much the point of overwatch on these guys. Only a fool would charge something with Stomp.

That thing is huge and awesome. I put in an order this evening for a Knight Castigator, after deciding that the look of it trumped the rules of the Acheron. Thanks for all the input from everyone. Feel free to keep the thread open, everyone likes a good discussion about giant stompy robots. I'm sure there are others out there wondering about what are good applications for the various Knights.
