Subject: Playing without a units codex or IA book?

Just wondering what your guys opinion is on this? Now I personally do have all the codices I need but though I would include them anyway. My personal situation however is I'm playing a game with my Nids this weekend and I've been unable to find a copy of IA 4, FW has sold out for a fair while and none are on ebay atm. I do have a Malanthrope and the rules are rather easy to find in non legit sources.
With my close mates I doubt it would be an issue, but when it comes to games arranged online or against relative strangers I'm worried it might be. What are peoples thoughts on this? I'm personally planning on photocopying the required page and also bookmarking the digital rules via battlescribe.

You could print all the parts of the IA 4 and your codex you need:
so you can say you get all the books, but just printed it to avoid congestion / damaging it ?
If you print just the malathrape datasheet, I think it will be more obvious you don't own the book.

In all honesty, I don't think I know anyone who would mind. If it's one unit in your army and you simply didn't want to carry an IA book, I'd say the same.
If your entire army was a mix of different FW books and PDFs and datasheets, then I'd be a bit leery. But for one thing? That'd be reet.

having a legitimate copy is only an issue for tournaments and other stuff. In general most pick up games are quite friendly (not that this forum would lead you to believe that) and as long as it doesn't look like you photoshopped it, no one would mind. I once played a game with sticky notes of the units I had simply because to have carried everything (rulebook, Codex: Blood Angels, Shield of Baal: Exterminatus, Codex: Space Wolves and Champions of Fenris) and then trying to find the rules would have been too much (especially since I used a grand total of 3 units from each codex). EDIT: Note that I did have the codexes on hand on ipad. I just didn't actually use them but had them on hand in case of a rule dispute.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do. |

I'd say it's ok because the rules are OOP. You aren't pirating stuff because you don't want to pay for a legitimate copy, you're pirating one unit's rules because there's no other way to get those rules. I might get suspicious and check my own "non legit sources" after the game if your rules seem too powerful and you're going to be in a lot of trouble if you cheated, but that's the only possible concern I'd have.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |
