Finally able to get into the gaming side of 40k (lack of money preventing me from doing anything but 'fluff' until recently), and a few mates have decided to get into it as well...

We're planning to have a few 500pt battles to get used to the rules and get a better idea of how we want to play. At the moment I'm looking at making a custom Space Wolf chapter using the chapter traits section of the Space Marine codex. Basiclly it's a drop pod Space Wolf army, specialising in rapid assaults (due to fluff reasons I'll list in a later post), and I've changed them slightly with the following;

Note: Classed as a 'Minor Divergence' chapter

Advantage
- "Heed the wisdom of the ancients"
Dreadnoughts may be taken as Heavy Support or as Elites. Any Dreadnoughts selected as Elites must be Venerable and the 0-1 limit is removed.

Drawback
- "Death before dishonour"
At the end of any game involving one army with this drawback, the opposing player can request an extra turn be played. On a D6 roll of 4+ an extra turn is played.

As I said, I'll go into greater depth about what I'm thinking of doing with my Space Wolves in another thread, but for the moment...

Basiclly what it's looking like I'll be going up against is;

Necrons

HQ
 - Necron Lord
Troops
- 2x 10 Necron Warriors
Fast Attack
- 3x Scarab Templates

Tau

HQ
- Crisis suit
Troops
- 6 Firewarriors
- 15 Kroot
Elites
- 3x Crisis suits

We're just mucking around and getting used to the rules etc atm, so we're not to concerned about going over the 500pt by a little (the Necron army is 501pt)

I was thinking of deploying;

HQ
Venerable Dreadnought
Troops
2x 10 Greyhunters with meltagun

= 505pt

any suggestions?

I don't think you can use the Space Wolf army list and add the chapter divergences from the Codex Space Marines.  I believe they only apply to the codex SM list and not the Blood Angel/ Dark Angel/Space Wolf lists.

Of course this wouldn't have to apply if you cleared it the guys you were going to be playing with.

seems like a good list to start off with, i have played with the wolves for over 7 yrs and all i can say is go with what you would have fun with playing with, later try the scouts.

Yeh all the forums I've posted in they've said not to use the divergence rules alongside the SW codex, so for now I'm just sticking with the standard SW codex.

got pwned versing my mate with the Tau yesterday. " alt="sad.gif" border="0">

We played 2 500 vs 500pt, then put the points available up to 750pt for another game.

Using proper SW codex my lists were;

1st Game

HQ
Wolf Lord (130) - Frost Blade - Bike

Troops
10 Grey Hunters (190) - Bolters - Meltagun
10 Grey Hunters (190) - Bolters - Meltagun

Total: 510pt

2nd Game

HQ
Venerable Dreadnought (125)

Troops
10 Blood Claws (140)
10 Blood Claws (140)

Elites
5 Wolf Scouts (75) - Sniper Rifle (Was trying to pin his commander)

Total: 480pt (not sure what happened there, made the list up on the spot, so must have made a mistake when I was adding points, could of really used those 20pt :?)

3rd Game

HQ
Wolf Lord (133) - Frost Blade - Bike - Wolf Pelt

Troops
6 Grey Hunters (119) - Bolters - Plasma Gun
6 Grey Hunters (119) - Bolters - Plasma Gun

Elites
Dreadnought (145) - Multi-melta - Drop Pod

Fast Attack
3 Blood Claws Bikes (116) - 2x Power Weapon - Plasma Gun
3 Blood Claws Bikes (116) - 2x Power Weapon - Plasma Gun

Total: 748pt

In the first two battles my mate was using a Crisis Suit commander, 3 Crisis Suits in 3 separate squads, 15 Kroot, and 6 Fire Warriors. All of his Crisis Suits were outfitted with Plasma Guns and Missile Pods

For the 750pt game he also added 7 Gun Drones in a squad, a second Crisis Suit commander, and another Crisis Suit, putting 2 of them into a squad together.

In the first battle I lost everything except one of the Grey Hunters with a Meltagun, who managed to survive 2 turns of close combat vs the Kroot on his own, and then a 3rd turn against the Kroot and all of the Crisis suits and the commander, taking down 3 Kroot. " alt="biggrin.gif" border="0">

In the second battle my Venerable Dread kept getting pounded with Missile Pods, keeping him useless for the whole game as he was unable to return fire due to Crew Shaken results. The scouts were useless, due to bad deployment, and my Blood Claws never managed to get in range of the enemy, even for their pistols, with one squad getting decimated in one turn, and the other getting smashed up badly, then failing they're morale test and running for the hills.

In the last game, I finally managed to cause some damage, killing both the HQ Crisis Suits, and all of the kroot, but I got absolutely slaughtered in return. My poor Dread got pummeled as soon as he got out of his Drop Pod, only managing to take 1 Kroot with him, and both my Grey Hunter squads never even saw battle, getting wasted from long range by the Missile Pods.

All in all, my Space Wolves had a very bad day, failing 5 morale tests, a pinning test (dam Gun Drones...), and many an armour save.

thats quite bad, but hopefully you will learn a little from each loss and not make the mistake again. anyway when playing tau try get into combat asap, but always try go behind cover and stuff so he dont get a line of sight.
