Here is the goal, you are going to start a new Tyranid army and have a 500 dollar budget. You can build the army however you like. You can go competitive, fluffy, goofy, pure lolz, etc. Please list what models you would grab and why.

Starting Box Set - $85
1 X Hive Tyrant = great for a starting flyrant or HQ
1 X Warrior Box = Excellent troop synapse choice
1 X Gargoyles = Good disruptor / fast response / annoyance unit

3 x Zoanthropes - $66
Warp Blast + Synapse + Tough to shift = Fun anti-tank

1 x Tyranid Swarm Box - $170
1 x Carnifex (Brute Muscle MC)
40 Termagants = Objective Holders
40 Hormagaunts = Rushers
12 x Gargoyles = Joins the others for a rush swarm with the Flyrant

1 x Harpy / Crone (AA) - $80

3 Warriors + 51 (More Synapse)
Broodlord for 40

Whole idea is to have some AA (Crone) AT (Zoanthropes) Anti-everything (Tyrant) and enough bulk so it feels like an actual nid army.

If you are patient, I say wait till next year and see how 8th edition works. If you need it now, get the Gets Started box for Nids. Maybe 2 or 3 of them to make into Flyrants, and then you will have a nice sized brood of Gargoyles and Warriors. Yes I know, Warriors are not that good rules wise, but are a beauty.

Then see if you can get the big box set for Gaunts and the Carnifex.

I say go what looks cool, and great for you. Don't worry what the internet says.

Also Mawlocs/Trygon kits is a beaut as well. Maybe you want a Spore pod (sorry forget the proper name). The mulicoids that you can make out of it make great cheap troop choices from what I read.

Then decide something cool to ship in them. Going unbound is easy and the best route but you could also go for 4x CAD.
Avoid all deepstriking stuff, and focus on things that can hide from los behind those crates

I LOVE THIS. It needs its own formation

I'm a big fan of running big, fluffy nid armies. There's a reason I have 200+ gaunts and gants

I would go with something like this:
1 Swarm Box - $170
-40 horms
-40 terms
-10 gargoyles
-1 carnifex
-4 ripper swarms
Gives you plenty of troops to play with. Looks like a real nid army from the fluff.

2 start collecting box - $85 each
-2 hive tyrants
-20 gargoyles
-6 warriors
Gives you your much needed synapse and HQs. Plus more gargoyles to block LOS to your big guys.

3 Venomthropes - $66
Provides a much needed boost to cover saves for most of your swarm.

1 Carnifex Brood - $90
-2 carnifexes
Not the best heavy choice, but they are solid. Plus they'll add to your first one from the swarm box to create a full brood.
OR
If you don't like carnifexes, sell the one you got from the swarm box and pick up two of any of the heavy choices:
2 Trygons/Mawlocks/Tyrannofexes/Tervigons = $116
2 Exocrenes/Haruspexes/Toxicrenes/Maleceptors = $146

Total: $496.
This is obviously not a tourney list, as it has a ton of troops. However IMO it provides a fluffy, fun army to play with that would also be very easy to expand on. Want more heavies like trygons and mawlocks? Throw them in. Want more fliers? Throw in a hive crone or harpy (or 2). You can add a ton of elites, heavies, or fast attacks to this list to fit your gaming preference, plus you have flexibility to switch it up between games. It'll definitely keep you busy with building and painting for a long time!

Deathleaper and 5 Lictors for the Deathleaper Assassination Brood formation.

A Carnifex for Old One Eye.

4 boxes of Genestealers.

3 Mawlocs for some heavy lifting.

Makes for a nice fluffy vanguard foce for a Hive Fleet.
