I thought that was already an established fact that Magnus was a superior psyker.

The question is, do you consider the Primarchs human?

There's a difference between the genetically human, but biologically engineered Astartes and the genetically engineered primarchs.

Magnus is more powerful than Malcador, but Malcador's still the most powerful human.

Everybody wins

This. Malcador I think is still the most powerful Human psyker relative to the Emperor, but because Magnus was a Primarch gifted with relatively extreme psykic ability, he is obviously more powerful than Malcador. But because Magnus is a Primarch and not human, Magnus does not hold the title of '2nd most powerful human psyker'.

Malacador was killed almost immediately by the Golden throne, Magnus was destined to sit on it forever. That says something about their relative abilities

Magnus was designed to sit on a stable throne. Malcador was sitting on the throne while it was also a portal actively spitting out the entirety of hell on loop.

I don't see anything in that blurb that suggests that Magnus is human.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I've never believed that the Emperor intended for Magnus to sit on the throne. It only needed someone on it because Magnus broke it, so how could that have been the original plan?

The Emperor is also genetically modified, so if we discounted Magnus on that basis we'd have to exclude the Emperor as well, making Malcador the most powerful human psyker. Seems that Malcador is the most powerful naturally born psyker, Magnus the second most powerful psychic being genetically designed to be so by the first place.

In Thousand Sons the emperor tells magnus it was his intention for him to sit on it, it was for a different purpose pre-damage than it is currently

Given that Magnus is a direct genetic descendant from the Emperor, who is the most-powerful of human psykers, why would this be a surprising fact? Magnus was designed to be that way.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

There has been a long running debate about whether Magnus or Malcador is the stronger psyker, so the thread has probably come about as an attempt to conclude that debate.

Given that the Throne was designed as a webway portal, I doubt Magnus would need to have been sitting on the throne permanently.

More likely, he'd operate it when it was required (probably very frequently), but it wouldn't have been the constant psychic drain that the throne is at the moment.

Didn't it also say that from the throne, Magnus would have been able to continue his research without the dangers he was facing in the warp? If I'm not miss remembering that, he'd probably have just been sat on it in a permanent state of meditation with his consciousness elsewhere.

Makes sense, he's a primarch. that said Malcador is one of my favorite characters because he's a normal human, who largely set up what made the IOM survive, could beat down most of his bosses bratty kids, and likely gave his last breath to keep the big E alive.
