I don't really like the bright pink... I'm thinking about maybe spray priming with Army Painters Dawnstone equivalent and shading with a red or pink shade. Does anyone have a pic or two of what that would look like?

I don't have what you're after, but what you could try is doing them a pale, caucasian fleshy colour and wash them with something like P3 Flesh wash.Alternatively something like P3 Sanguine Highlight is already quite a pinky red, use that as a base and layer up adding small quantities of very light grey or white. Similarly you could get a light purple such as Vallejo Model Colour Purple (044) and layer up, again adding white or light grey incrementally..
A quick google suggesrs to me that Dawnstone is too dark a grey to be particularly affected by a wash.
Who says they have to be pink if you don't like the trad representation? I've seen all sorts on the web:

I'm liking that red one.
Is the flesh wash more brown than red? I want a more reddish look.

My limited experience of the P£ one is that it's deifnitely got more of a red tinge, thana brown one. It's close to Reaper's Auburn Shadow

I really like Secret Weapon's red washes and I've seen pink horrors that were really well done by basecoating them in a pale grey and then having successive washes of Secret Weapons ruby wash ( http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=54&products_id=226 ) applied.

Another thing I recommend is to paint some blue on your Pinks and some pink (or in this case redish/maroon) on your Blues. That way you only need as many Blue horrors as you have Pinks. Each time 1 Pink dies, you can reuse it and a new Blue to represent both Blues. Gets the most bang for your buck.
These are mine:

I own 120 painted horrors. I painted them in batches of 20.
The batch skin colors were pink, pink, blue, purple, grey, orange.
Looking back I wish I would have just painted their limbs a separate color and kept there bodies and face pink.
With the release of blue horrors a day Brimstone Horros I am looking for different ways of portraying blue horrors. They are half the size of pinks so doing blending on limbs would be difficuly.
Brimstone Horrors are mush easier as you can change the ends of the flames to be any color (yellow into black, orange into purple, red into teal). Many variations as the entire model is one flame.

Utilizing Careful Highlighting

Back before the blue horror box was released I assembled 10 pink horrors then just chopped them literally in half. Green stuffed some tentacles over the jagged sides and that was my blue horrors. If I was gonna attempt horror spam I'd prolly just use cheap flame bits from reaper rather than try brimstones. The Bones line has plenty of little fire guys.

Honestly if you want to go the path of buying flame bits to use as brimstones I'd actually suggest looking up a tutorial for sculpting flames and doing them yourself. Faster and way cheaper in the long run.

I did bunch of 'pink' horrors for WHFB and painted them all shades of the rainbow. Seriously, don't get hung up on pink.
