Hi I'm new to warhammer 40k and like the idea of playing tyranids.

Wayland Games do a bundle box of Tyranids for £84 and In that box there is a carnifex, 40 TermaGants, 40 Hormagants, 10 gargoyles and 3 ripper swarms.

Question 1) is this box worth buying if I'm starting out
Question 2) if I should get the box how should I add to my force.

1) In a word, no. If you're playing competitively, none of those units are worth anything. If you're just playing casually, it's solid, but SC! Tyranids is better.
2) Depends on how your local meta is. If people are very competitive, flying hive tyrants with TL Devourers and lots of them. If not, whatever you want, basically.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

mirroring what Verv said, if you want a competitive army, lots of flying hive tyrants with TL devs is your best bet, but if you just want a cool army and casual play, that bundle is a really good start, gets you your troops on the field and some gargoyles for objective nabbing. Things to concider getting are Hive tyrants (give wings and TL devs) as well as some Venomthropes if you pick that box, as it gives shrouded (2+ to cover save) to any units with at least one model in range, meaning 5+ save in open ground or a 2+ save in ruins!

I'm going to elaborate on what the other two posters said.

The answer to your question depends on what you want to do with the army and the environment you play in. This is because in comparative play Tyranids are limited to a single viable build, which is structured around bringing as many (5-7) Hive Tyrants with wings and devourers as possible.

If you intend to play competitive tournaments regularly or if you frequently play against people who commonly run top tier tournament builds you do not want this box.

If you don't plan on trying to win a GT anytime soon and are interested in the army due to the fluff and cool models, the box is a good buy. The units in it are useful for building the classic horde style Tyranid army and the price is reasonable.

If you get the box you will be lacking inn synapse (leader units). A Hive Tyrant is a very good buy. Consider Tervigons and Zoanthropes. Both are interesting units that are fun to play but have flaws that keep them from being amazing. Venomthropes are very very useful and should be in almost every Tyranid army.

Yep, I agree with the other posters. One more thing to add though. If you are looking to play competitively, you probably don't want to start nids in the first place. As they said, nids only really have 1 viable tourney build. You would be happier picking another army for tournaments. However, if you like the army, the models, the fluff, the challenge of playing a lower tier army, or all of the above, then pick up the box. It has great value and will give you a ton of troops to fit any build you do.
