Anyone have any tips / tricks to offer working with Liquitex Matte Varnish?

Chalking this up to experience. I applied some to a model over the weekend and it was anything but matte.

When I used it, I poured a small amount into a plastic cup and applied it with a thick brush. I stirred it just a little, and the brush was dry - it only gets used for varnishing. I did 2 layers before realizing something went wrong.

The varnish dried to a high shine. It's is thick, like what I would expect to see on a woman's nails. Feels like I could throw it against a wall with no chipping. It's transparent, there's no clouding, but it's anything but matte.

I know I did something wrong, anyone have any ideas for how to make sure this never happens again?

I haven't used the product but did you shake it before you poured it out? Stirring the cup afterwards will not have mixed all the varnish it had settled already in the original container.

I don't know the chemistry but there will be matting agents that need to be thoroughly mixed to avoid gloss finishes.
