This was just something I had wondered about. Have there been any documentation (either in fluff or in books etc) of mortals actually seeing any of the Chaos Gods in person? I was listening to a Youtube channel and they had depicted Slaanesh that if mortals had laid their eyes upon he/she/it that they would immediately lose their souls and become a slave to Slaanesh. Just really curious what interactions mortal would have directly in the presence of a Chaos God.

Well we all know Draigo has bowed to slannesh (Nobody actually knows for sure, but its a rumor)

In GSII the eldar triumvirate was trapped in a room with Tzeentch, but I don't think any of them actually looked at him (obviously, or then it would just be a double-virate?)

That's AWESOME. I haven't followed the fluff for the Gathering Storm stuff so I might look into that now. I can understand why they wouldn't want to look at Tzeentch and Slaanesh, but what about Khorne and Nurgle? I feel like they wouldn't have might not cause mortals to lose their souls immediately, more so Khorne because I think that would make them useless at that point.

Those are the only two real accounts I can think of.

Malal can manifest in reality, so I'm assuming someone has seen him, but I don't think he's part of the 40k universe anymore.

I don't know if you 'count' him as a mortal but IIRC Archaon has seen all 4, or at least figments/parts of them.

I'm unsure about the 40K version of Be'lakor, but he was the first human elevated to Daemon Princedom in Fantasy.

If that holds true for 40K, i'm assuming he must have seen some part of the essence of the Chaos Gods...

The text just put Yvraine toughts that their are trapped between the Webway and Tzeentch and she feels that if she turns to look at him, that will drove her insane. The Yncarne and the Visarch seems to be busy slashing the side of the Webway and seems to not notice the specific situation.

Oh really? I apologize for my misinformation.

I have only read a recap, and that's what the recap described it as

Magnus might have seen something approaching a Chaos god during his flight to the Golden Throne. It mentions his trip as something like flying through the ocean, with great beings like continents looming beneath him in the dark.

There is a story is in the 6th ed Daemons codex (page 16; titled "The palace of Slaanesh") where "a wandering knight of the Adeptus Astartes" goes through Slaanesh's realm and meets the deity at the end.

Nurgle is known to pluck the uninvited visitors from his mudpits and take them to his mansion to converse with them, hear about what's going on in the universe.

Typhus (AKA Calas Typhon) travelled to the Manse of Nurgle and dipped his scythe in the filth surrounding his great cauldron before quickly taking his leave, as Nurgle is also known for adding people who stay to long in his kitchen to his latest concoction.

"Show me where it says that in the codex!" said Learchus.
"You know brother that I cannot." said Uriel.

It's very usual for mortal champions to enter the respective realms of the chaos gods and have audiences with their patron god.

Maybe the definitely was an exaggeration, but what else could it mean?
"Such was the resultant favour of the Lord of Decay that Typhus was allowed to reach the throne of Nurgle himself, presenting his offering before dipping his battle scythe into the filth that pooled around its base and withdrawing quickly before death finally found him. "

One of the Daemon Princes created by Forgeworld has a backstory like this.

"Uraka's reign of terror lasted a decade. Ten years of constant warfare and raiding that earned him the title 'Warfiend' in his own language. Such was Khorne's pleasure with his mortal champion that, upon his eventual death in battle, Khorne summoned summoned Uraka's soul to his realm. Uraka was borne to the Citadel of Brass and there he came face to face with his deity.
Before the Throne of Skulls, surrounded by Khorne's mightiest daemonic servants, the Blood God put Uraka to the final test. For the god's pleasure and entertainment he would fight a Bloodthirster in single combat. If he won he would be granted daemonhood, his reward an eternity serving Khorne in battle. Defeat would mean becoming a Chaos Spawn, cursed to mindless insanity."

Its interesting actually, as the fluff suggests not much actually happens when laying eyes on khorn or nurgle, rather its tzeench and slannesh that have an incredible effect on not only mortals but daemons from other gods aswell.

There is the whole story that depicts slannesh's palace as 1 lone marines walks its many circles and halls (some think this is Draigo) suggests that anyone, no matter how strong their willpower who gaze upon him is immediately beguiled into eternal servitude, and often rewarded for making it past all the circles of pleasure. The same fluff stated that even when an army of bloodletters cut and smashed their way to slanneshs domain once they layed eyes on him they were all eternally bound to serve slannesh, even bloodletters, the daemons on khorn bowed to slannesh.

In relation to tzeench there are two instances I can find of what happens to the mortals when gazing upon tzeench, there is the tzeench spells where tzeench himself looks through the eyes of his servant, stating that any who tzeench gazes upon rapidly and hideously mutate into hideous abominations or die in warpflame. Alternativly there is the new cuthulu-esk fluff of any who gaze upon him fall into a state of eternal madness.

Now that is a stunning piece of imagery...

I've always liked the idea that the Chaos Gods are utterly alien in both form and function. Rather than just 'a giant Bloodletter', I'd imagine them to be far more like colossal Lovecraftian entities that are near-incomprehensible to the mortal mind. All this talk of 'gardens of nurgle' and 'palaces of slaanesh' is all just the mortal mind trying desperately to comprehend the incomprehensible sensory inputs it's experiencing.

You can possibly see a glimpse of what you think a Chaos God is, but you cannot truly comprehend its true form.
