I know this is probably a shot in the dark by posting this on this forum, but you never know who trains these days! People that train aren't that uncommon anymore and my gym is mostly filled with IT guys and engineers anyways. It's a BJJ and MMA striking gym for those wondering.

Anyways, I'm looking into expanding my current skill set with some take downs. The gym I train at has BJJ but there's only one take down class and it's tough to make it for me. So I decided to look into some Judo gyms because it's tough to find wrestling classes for anyone other than kids.

Hell, I'd be interested in a sambo gym too if I could find a good one.

I was inspired after watching some videos today..

Just wondering if anyone does this kind of stuff here!

I train in BJJ (Gi and no Gi)and Krav Maga, which also has take downs. I think several people on here train in something.

I've done Hapkido and traditional Jujitsu for years which both train in using and countering takedowns as well as throws. However ground fighting is viewed a last resort technique, it has it's place in 1-on-1 fights and sports matches but in practical street fighting or fighting multiple opponents remaining on your feet for mobility s crucial. Both styles focus on disabling opponents through a combinations of strikes, throws, grappling and joint locks which can become part of a take down if desired.

I've also practiced Aikido which has many of the same core elements in the movements and throws but the philosophy is much different in that you don't tend to strike or take things to the ground. It's taught more akin to "assisting" and redirecting the opponents movements which enhances their own state of inbalance and guiding their falls so that hitting the ground tends to defeat them. It does involve a lot of grappling but it done as part of rapid movements and locks rather than reliant on wrestling strength.

The most important advice you'll ever get if your physically threatened is take the first good chance you have to make a fething run for it. To run you have to stay on your feet. Getting locked into a ground game (especially against multiple assailants) is putting yourself in a bad situation.

Though in terms of sports fighting (especially UFC) it always seems to end up as a hugging match whenever I watch XD

Cool to see people train BJJ here, osss!

I agree with LordofHats on just running away. Avoiding the situation is a lot safer than being in it. If it comes down to it though, better to know some kind of self-defense / martial arts than nothing.

Do witticisms and scathing comments count as takedowns?

If you are just looking to acquire some combat-effective takedowns then traditional jujitsu and judo are both excellent choices.

I have trained in BJJ myself but the overwhelming majority of schools/gyms are primarily concerned with sports competitions ( as are most martial arts schools ) which is entirely different to conditions encountered in combat. I have rarely met a good competitive martial artist who was very good on the street.

I have trained in martial arts since 1985 and hold belts in Goju-Ryu karate, Tae Kwon Do, Sil Lum Kung fu, Judo, Jujitsu, and Liuhebafa. (I travelled a bit while in the army and got to attend schools in various places.)

Without question, a serious warrior needs to have a strong grasp of takedowns and counters to takedowns, as well as weapons defenses.

While I don't do Judo or traditional throwing arts, with HEMA we do get into takedowns with the sword

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

lvl combatives certified. I was always just a brute force thinker and never did well in it. Although my state of mind always changed how my grappling would turn out. If I got angry, I was more effective. During normal training hours when we were there because we had to be there I tended to not do as well. I guess thats why my marksmanship was always better. I hate being in close quarters.

Whilst I dont do judo per se, my karate teacher has a broad of different martials (boxing judo kick boxing) and likes to borrow from judo to compensate for weaknesses in karate (ground fighting)

I'm a 7th Kyu Orange Belt, been doing karate for the last year, so still early days and still a relative novice. I've seen take downs demonstrated and done a few basic ones myself but not much. I've just gotten to a level where you start learning bunkai. I actually put my teacher on the floor once accidentally with a simple hip throw. Was only supposed to practice the motion, not follow through. It was surprising how easy it is with leverage even against someone heavier than you.

I have done sambo, which was inspired by judo (among others) to a large degree.
I also do medieval martial arts, which is mostly about using traditional weapons but also has wrestling and many forms of takedowns in it.
