Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I have red - green colourblindess (also troubles with some blues) and I have found that a lot of my models have problems with staying 'in the lines' for colours that are close together in the spectrum (at least according to my friends and some users on this site ).

I wondered if anyone else on this site has problems with seeing colour and has find ways to get around this problem without having to alter colour schemes too much or having to continuously go back to the model once someone points out the problems. It would also be interesting to see how many painters/modellers on here are colour blind.

Personally the only thing I have found that helps is using a magnifying lamp whilst I do fine detail but the lamp is very annoying (it's quite large and gets in the way of actually painting the model) and the bulb is very bright so I always come away with strained eyes/headache.

My youngest son has a red-green and some blue differentiation issues as well.
I noticed though he is exceptional at seeing the shade/grade of the colours just like his grandpa.

Reading (cheater) glasses are good or the jeweler's visor work well.
Full spectrum lights on two swing-arms help get the light on target better to see.

If in doubt, work to your strengths with the colours you know you see well.
At the very least, my son loves my Black Templar army.

I'm colour blind.

Generally find it fine as all the colours are named and have labels on. Difficulty comes when going 'off the beaten track', as it were, experimenting with different colours can be interesting but I've found asking help from friend/family useful and this community that is always ready to help out.

Currently confused over using warpfiend grey and slaanesh grey... is it a grey/pink/purple????!

I am not at all, but one of my Warhammer buddies is color-blind, but you couldn't tell as well as he has painted up his miniatures. I think that is one advantage of using GW and other brands of paints that are labeled on the pots/dropper as they are named rather than just described as "red-orange" or "puce" , for example. He painted up his models and wrote himself some very clear instructions on how to paint them to keep his army consistent.

Yes, it is, it's not just you. Some of the greys and browns in the GW line have hints of other colors in them (in my experience) that help them go really well with other colors.

Daemonette Hide is another one in that same vein, though it has a bit more purple to it.

EDIT:

This video makes me happy, and helps restore some of my faith in humanity. Awesome!

I have red-green too, and it's not got in the way that much. Ok, some people object to certain colour combinations, but like the others have said, if you know what colours you're starting with and have a basic understanding of colour therory, you can do anything you like.

I always forget his last name but there was a guy at my local GW down in so cal a few years back who has won SEVERAL golden demon painting awards including 2 slayer swords who is TOTALLY red-green color blind. His miniatures have a very "different" feel to them yet are astonishingly beautiful! Skill is skill.
