I've been playing a fair amount of skirmish type games with my 2 sons. Mostly boardgame stuff or Kill Team.

They have found AoS, I'm sure while wishlisting on GW or something.

Question is, if I get the Starter box and a couple Start Collecting boxes, will that work out for 4ish armies than can play small skirmish stuff? I'm thinking; Starter Box, Ironjawz, and Sylvaneth.

Trying to start small and let them get a feel for things before they start wanting Behmoths and such.

Also, and because I haven't played WHFB in about a decade.... I'm having some issues wrapping my head around the "bring/buy/run whatever you want" setup.

Is that limited to the 4 major "sides" or literally anything goes with anything?

If you want more structure to your army building, the General's Handbook is a must.

Alternatively, www.scrollbuilder.com has an army building tool online for points and force organization.

Also for smaller skirmish games, you might want to try bottle's hinterlands campaign ruleset

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The starter set and start collecting boxes have enough models for skirmish type games. Each side would have roughly 600 pts each. The starter set has more heroes, however.

The basic rules is pretty much like unbound in 40k. You can bring whatever you like with whichever alliance. Most buffs however work based on specific keywords. For example, the khorne hero gives +1 attack to units with the "khorne" keyword. Bringing him along an ironjawz army would be pretty useless.

The general's handbook gives this more structure in matched play.

Units now get points, and basic army building is limited to one of the four grand alliances, then 1 leader (HQ) and 2+ battleline (troops), with more battleline requirement as you scale up the points.

Most armies have benefits if going monofaction.

Thanks for the clarity.

I found an older spreadsheet someone on Reddit did that gives a decent breakdown of how much money it would cost to put together a 1k point list of almost all the armies.

Now, off to find cheap AoS!

It might be good to know a new and cheaper starter box is coming out:

Yes, and blood and thunder would make KBB and SCE pretty similar in points to the other armies, though you'd miss a bit of veriety.

Yea, I saw that.

Although it is missing some stuff from the current box.

Oh indeed, not as great as the main starter set (which is so worth it ) but you did say "cheap" so I thought it'd be helpful.

Well, 25%-40% off is "cheap" to me.

Basically anything over the few online stores that still sell GW stuff, lol..

Shhh, they haven't seen those yet.

Plus, if I can keep those out of sight, maybe I can get them for myself.
