Like stated on the thread title.

I'm modeling a SM army and won't model every six tactical units and two devastators with just grav cannon shooting from a rhino. I'll propably give some lascannons for devastators to give backfield fire support so that's that. The real question is that do people ever run their marines with grav gun and combi-grav or plasma gun and combi-plasma. I know it's always case sensitive and what goes into synergy with the rest of the army, but let's forget that for a change.

Which would be your pick and why?

5man tactical squad with plasma/grav with matching combi riding in a rhino.

Plasma has it's range, but also the "ones do happen" factor. Moving rhino with grav's give you four shots at something within 9", range is terrible, but shots are actually more than a grav cannon on the move.

Can I go wrong with either? I'm glueing these minis so can't really cancel after I've selected my option. Special weapon bits are a dying breed on my bits box.

All Grav except the pistol version are salvo weapons. So my answer to such question will often be "plasma guns on Tactical Squads; while Grav guns on Biker"

Grav is better IMO. Grav can melt MC better than plasma plus all you need is a 6 to wound on a tank and its immobilized (which is stupid) although the Grav Cannon is obv better. I hate plasma b/c its usually unreliable i want my enemy to kill me not me to kill me.
