Hey DakkaDakka!

With the local gaming group returning to 40k, and after pouring through old White Dwarf issues, I thought it might be fun to do a “Tale of Four Gamers” type challenge to encourage everyone to get their armies painted up through the power of peer pressure.

So to see away that unpainted plastic grey we'll have regular deadlines to get our armies fully painted up. The milestones aren't super demanding because we're all balancing full-time work and other commitments, but the goal is to have our armies fully painted by year's end.

So we're all aboard the hobby train now. Keep your arms and legs inside at all times, do not alight the train while it is in motion.

The participants are:

Iamshirtacus – Imperial Fists

Doomweaver – Hawk Lords

Quinzy – Alpha Legion

Zuvassin – Inquisition

VyndusSpire – Dark Eldar

and myself – Chaos Legions

We'll all be blogging progress in this thread as we battle lamplight and glued fingers, striving to hit those milestones. VyndusSpire doesn't have an account on here, so I'll be posting pics on his behalf. The first milestone was to have a singe miniature fully painted up, a proof of concept for the army, a flavour of what's to come.

And so the challenge begins!

Over the years I have proven to be quite restless with my hobby projects, bouncing army to army without fully finishing any of them. In fact, I was meant to be (re)starting up Orks when we started up 40k again, but changed my mind after digging my old DG army out of storage.

After a few months of painting Death Guard, I started to feel restless again. So to mitigate this, inspired both by 4th ed. Chaos being the super best friends and Forgeworld's 30k miniatures, I decided to launch a one man Heresy.

I'll be painting up units from each Chaos Legion, with the specialist/cult troops matching their most appropriate legion - World Eater Berzerkers, Word Bearers Possessed, Night Lords Raptors etc., with Black Legion making up the core. I might even throw in some renegade guardsman. The variety of colour schemes and tabletop versatility of the army should keep my hobby wanderlust in check

My original DG were painted in the Heresy era colour scheme, so I decided to do the same with the rest of the legions. I figure the army could either be an early post-Heresy force (possibly travelling through time due to warp shenanigans) or a warband that never bothered repainting their armour because they were too busy doing chaos things.

My mini for the first deadline is a Son of Horus/Black Legionnaire, hopefully capturing the various identities of the XVIth Legion in a tabletop quality colour scheme!

As part of the ToSG, this is my section for the Imperial Fists.

First model is my Company Champion, its assumed its a champion of battle/ combat but never explicity stated so he's a champion of freestyle verse.

I started life as a Lost and the Damned player, only to have my precious baby relegated to the history books a year later. Thus began my pilgramage to their more armoured Astartes cousins. After collecting a bit of everything Chaos, and never really finishing anything major, they went on the backburner. When we picked up 3rd ed again and I started the LaTD again, I took out some old CSM and painted Alpha Legion. One thing lead to another and I've decided to do a late Heresy era AL squad along with my post heresy guys. Here's a look at the proof of concept Legionnaire, and old Space Crusade man who'll form the a good chunk of my Marines.

VyndusSpire showed us all up by completing an entire squad of his Eldar Corsairs/Dark Eldar for the first milestone instead of just about cobbling together a single miniature. Looking forward to seeing how this army of degenerates progresses --

I will be playing a grab-bag of minis and armies, so Inquisition seems like a natural choice for me.

Most of these models were 10+ years old sitting in wardrobes, and I never felt I could paint them adequately. So they festered in the back of my mind for a decade. It was only this year I worked up the courage to start them. I try follow the John Blanche aesthetic, and so I limited my colour palette and gave them a “warm” look with red and brass. I've yet to do larger units of diverse models, as I prefer to convert and paint individuals.

It's likely these will be allied with Skitarii and Imperial Guard. I'm really looking forward to Armageddon: Shadow Wars!

This is the first time I've really fully committed to putting together an army from, start to finish. While I was always intrigued with the idea of warhammer and have a huge love for strategy games in general, I just never really fell into a crowd that shared that interest while growing up.

During college I made a big push to get into warmahordes, putting together a very small troll army (unpainted) to play casually with, but I couldn't justify the financial cost of keeping it up.

This is the first model I've ever assembled and painted to completion so hopefully with the rest of the guys keeping on my case I'll improve as time goes by ^^

We're currently playing the 5th edition rules for 40k and after going through the Chaos Codex, I reckon Gift of Chaos isn't actually too shabby at insta-killing characters, especially when they're Space Marine Captains with Iron Halos So in order to get the most out of it, I put together a spawn from some bits from the bits box.

The arms are mandibles from one of the bigger Tyranid kits, the head from a CSM champ spikey pole and some mixed bits from SM, CSM and Black Templar kits. Since he's meant to be a loyalist marine being exploded into a spawn through kayoss magik in midst of a battle I'll probably paint him like one of iamshirtacus's Imperial Fists, which is a nice excuse to paint yellow marines

I snapped a pic of each painting stage and you might see from the initial stages compared to the end product the unholy power of washes Still think the tentacle-claw arms need a little something extra but can't quite decide what.

Use a thinned purple wash and create bruises (I'd imagine you'd get quite bruised while mutating out that marine armor.), skin color gradients. I did so with my Flesh Easters just with a red shade, came out pretty cool. It's a nice option to make it look more chaotic.

Beautiful skin tone on that miniature! Gonna give that technique a go, looks like the exact thing the spawn needs, thanks!

Thanks, Just make sure to whipe away the shade from the edges as it dries. That way you get a nice gradient. It dries a little slower when thinned with Lahmian Medium thankfully.
Partially going to use the Spawn idea to if you don't mind. Especially the IF color... as I have a Iron Warriors army. Nothing better than letting those loyalist turn spawn, especially Imperial Fists.

Small update, apothecary and two sword brethren. They'll form part of a commabd squad with the champion I posted earlier, a standard bearer, and a captain. Command squad is black armour with yellow shoulder pads, except the white armour apothecary

As the thread IF player, this trend of modeling spawns on them is worrisome. Time to invest in librarians and physic hoods.

An updated "in action" shot of a Necromunda Enforcer squad I repainted. The red I had previously done with fluorescent yellow, but I feel the red pops more. The yellow was too chalky and pale. The game was Necromunda.

The squad is about 12 models strong, and it's a mix of Enforcers, metal Scouts with shotguns and Wolf Scouts with bolt pistols and ccws. The black armour had a grey edge highlight, and then a gloss varnish. The robes and uniforms are codex grey with a black wash, then highlighted with codex grey. The red is white over the black undercoat, then fluorescent yellow, then blood red.

I have also varnished these models with Vajello's matt varnish to protect them. I think this is essential in a skirmish game if you don't want their paint chipped to bits. In the past, this had turned glossy on me, but it didn't happen this time. Matt varnish (gloss) is something of a joke between us now.

By all means!

I've begun working on a CSM Kill Team for Shadow War: Armageddon, starting out with this chaos cultist. I'm going for a heretek/dark mech vibe as I plan for the warband to be led by a rogue Iron Warriors Warsmith who has been exiled from his legion (think Fabius Bile meets an Iron Father), and all the troopers are his gribbly creations. This chap is intended to have something of an Igor vibe about him.

I plan on using the Kill Team as Fabius Bile and his enhanced warriors in 40k, so it still counts as army progress!

Got some second hand Rhinos today. Slowly working on getting them fighting fit. Here's a WIP shot These will ferry some special-weapon guys and some Alpha legion heretek-themed Khorne Berserkers/Plague Marines to the front lines

So we may or may not have all gotten heavily derailed by the release of Shadow War: Armageddon

After a couple of weeks of testing the system out, we decided to run a SW:A campaign as a prelude of sorts to our 40k games. As such my thinking around the Kill Team has moved on somewhat and I decided to run GSC as a renegade Inquisitor's warband. A member of the Ordo Chronos, Kalt von Stahl will eventually set in motion the events that will lead to an army of early post-heresy chaos legionnaires being pulled into the "present" through warp time-travel shenanigans.

Started painting one of the cultists experimenting with a Blanchitsu style, still quite WIP --

These are some of my Skitarii killteam for Shadow Wars: Armageddon. They are a mixture of Skitarii Vanguard guns and heads, vehicle hooks and antennae, and Catachan/Marauder bodies. The ribbed suits are from the Genestealer Cult Neophytes.

Much of the look and fluff is inspired by this: http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/topic/7676229/15/ . I love his ideas and modelling, so can't take credit for the idea of a Forge World turned feral.

The unit has "3 tiers" - full fledged warriors of the Machine God, tech-helots with low quality gear, and bionics and tech-gladiators seeking to become Skitarii. The army is pastoral Graeco-Roman themed and fights to recover their sacred past.

_

The CognoScenti - Et in Teknopolis ego -

They're from the wastes of a Forge World that never was. Before the Hive, before the Rogue Traders, before even the marble columns and perfumed gardens of Kharybdis were the Priests of Mars.

The Explorator ship "Pandora's Gift" was scouting the planet for a rich Dimantium source suitable to be the basis for a Forge World, but the initial TechnoSeed sent by the fleet suffered some unknown disaster that left the Mechanicus personnel dreaming in stasis for centuries. Faulty control-psalms released untold biomechanical horrors on the unsuspecting world, where they stalked the forests as TechnoSatyrs, feeding and building new generations of monsters: cannibal constructs and skittering swarms of servo-skulls that can reduce a man to a lacerated pile of discarded bones.

Emerging after a lightning strike reset the console, half-insane, the Explorators began their off-kilter work and laid the stones of the Mechanicus Templum. But cut off from the wider Imperium, the mission went native and blended into Graeco Praeterium's society. Beneath the crust of the spreading facility, maintenance became ritual, history became myth, and the social structures of the Adeptus Mechanicus stagnated and atrophied. Few of the CognoScenti even remember the initial purpose of their mission as the hives above them spiralled to the stars, fuelled by the workings below the crust. But one Magos remembers.

The Shepherd was once a member of the CognoScenti until his obsession with feral mechanical lifeforms led him into self-imposed exile into the Underhive wastes between Skylla and Kharybdis, where he could be among his flock unhindered by the ritual and politics of Teknopolis. It is said that the Omnissiah's spirit resides in all mechanical things, and through them does He show His will. Somewhere, hidden away in the memory banks of an unwitting mechanical survivor, is the secret to unleashing the self-replicating TechnoSeed that will claim Graeco Praeterium for the Mechanicus.

So it is that the Shepherd has gathered a loose warband about him so that he might continue his tasks unmolested. Any lifeforms they encounter are either tamed - if they can be - or dispatched, their memories downloaded into the Shepherd's neural cortex before rot or implant overload corrupts the data stored in their brains.

Getting back to army painting after a long Shadow War Related Hiatus.

Imperial Fists are making some nice progress, just in time for the new edition. Army compy is still up in the air due to new edition changes. But a core part will be 3 full tactical squads, a squad of terminators with lightning claws, a dreadnough, and a captain.

I started with a Corax white spray, followed by Cassandra yellow shade over the white and a Lamenters medium lementars glaze on the yellow to make darker. The next stage is metal shoulder trims and black casing on the bolter.
