Hey, i've played a couple swa games so far and fielded orks. The results are:
1. Bigshoota boyz are the only ones that are killing something. And they even tend to kill above their enormous point cost (70 boy, 150 bigshoota, 15 red dot, they're likely to get an extra 75 pt ammo re-rolls and belt clips and stuff just cause they're mvp).
2. Nothing else seems to get anywhere near a shooty enemy - everything's too slow, too easy to pin and almost never gets up in time. 'eavy armor is a double-edged sword. Serious weapons ignore it and regular guns still pin boyz that now only get up on 1-s unless they're close to a boss nob. In which case they get up on 1,2 as he's likely to get 'eavy armor just in case. That might change with a painboy later on. And mellee-focused opponents seem to roll over boyz unless they roll a bunch of ones.

In this regard i've come to a conclusion that the best ork killteam is gona be 2 bigshoota boyz, a nob with a pk (to deal with termies), kombi-skorcha with a weapon reload, 'eavy armor and a hell ton of shoota boyz with lazer dots. They would all get 'eavy armor later on. Mellee can still be good but more as a counter-measure cause a boy with a choppa and a shank is still a fearsome fighter...that can't get anywhere but if the enemy's coming for him and there are 2-3 more boyz around to even the odds, why not!

What do you guyz think?

Orks are not forbidden from hiding. Only you can prevent you getting your guys close.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

I guess we need more terrain.

It just feels that shoota with a red dot is a really good and pretty affordable weapon from the get go and having a backup choppa is just 10 pts, so there's no real need to be kitting for mellee. Especially with our bad ini and armor. Mellee is good and all but if a boy gets an advance and rolls ws/bs i'd likely choose bs first.

In order to have balance between ranged and HTH combat, an SWA board needs to have a fair amount of terrain density.

Otherwise, as you've already found, it favors shooting too much.

While Orks are a great melee army in theory, their close combat skills do not translate well to SWA. You start off stronger with more models on the board, but lack the necessary perks in regards to melee that other dedicated CC armies have. They are a weird mix of shooting (i.e. have options at range) and melee, while an army of Harlequins are running instead of shooting to be in range for the charge. They are even harder to hit when they run and have an additional save, while your advances will generally end in you getting pinned or downed.

If you run the majority of your Orks bare bones you will not have Parry, which for me turned out to be the most important part of CC. One Parry was the difference between a GK who went down in a fight and another who ended up killing two CSM in separate fights.

If you want to play the melee game keep the majority of your Boys together. This will not work against most armies that favor shooting unless you can get in through LOS terrain, but adds numbers to your CC against DE, GK, Harlequins, etc.

Orks don't have access to swords anywayz. So, no parries for us.
