I posted this elsewhere but just wanted to get a few opinions.

After reading the rules and faction releases its apparent 8th is more a tweaking of either current 7th edition rules (random charges / advances, terrain types, mission types, warlord traits etc) or a throwback to previous editions (transport assaults, ork mob rule, 2nd ed minus modifiers) than a complete overhaul of the 40k "engine".
Added to this are the actual unit rules - swooping hawk skyleap, warp spider flickerjump, ork mob rule, tervi spawning, trygon tunnels, AoS-stlye, deepstrikes etc etc.

Whilst I dont think this is necessarily a bad thing - 7th was rules bloat x 100, Im a but disappointed they didnt come up with some cool new faction rules.
Literally spit balling here but something for marines ala DoW2 - relentless advance, where they perhaps could advance once per game firing on full and not take a morale check but next turn fire half shots or something (dont take this too seriously, its just a silly example).
Or Tau hit and run - every unit can one make JSJ attack per game (again spit balling here!).

What are your guys thoughts? Im excited for 8th dont get me wrong, I just feel it could have pushed the envelope a bit more rather than remixing older editions.

And a final thought on missions, I was quite disappointed to see no return to assyemtrical mission types ala 2nd. They were really really strong imo. You have to assassinate my psyker whilst I have to destroy your bunker. Added a real dimension to the game.

Anywho, just some random ramblings!

Well faction rules will likely come with they do updates. What we're seeing right now is simply a very simplified translation of the old codexes into 8th-compatible rules.

As for the changes, I think it is quite enough. We have seen the removal of vehicles entirely, which is huge considering they had been rather important for 40k since 3rd edition. It also saw the change of the way we shoot template weapons entirely. I dare say had they been forced to change more then they would effectively be inventing a new game.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.

I think they lost their nerve.
40k is their big money maker and a massive outcry would be a big panic button.
The best form of editing advice is "Kill your darlings."
I think they were unable to do that.
Too much of how 40k worked may have been considered "essential" to preserve the 40k "flavor".
Many system methods are probably preventing the game from moving forward.
To explore deletion of "core" elements of the old game should have been a consideration.

I think it has been largely dusting off old elements of the game picking and choosing from various "darlings" of the past.
They will run perilously close to quickly getting back to the old bloat in short order.

In the stream they were taking a Disgustingly Resilient save for the Defiler and Helbrute, soo...there is likely something we're missing (DG codex).

In the event they were wrong we'll still see more stuff. That book in December could have all the chapter/sept/etc rules.

8th ed is a pretty major over haul. 6th to 7th was a tweeking.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Quite clearly a DG codex with the already shown models on the way in July.

A rather big reboot for 40k. Indexes seems a little bland, but i guess the new codexes will flesh things out. Looking at past history this makes me worry some though. Still remember the first codexes after 7 ed where it seemed GW has chosen a more toned downed design direction in GK, SW and orks. Then they jumped ship with eldar...
