After setting up objective markers Chaos was first to deploy a unit and first to move. This was an objective game, however neither side paid much mind to the objectives instead just moving towards each other eager to resolve some fights. The Chaos first turn amounted to nothing besides some set up with only 2 units(Devastators and Chosen) firing (both missing).
Next my Wolves have a chance to move, I chose to sweep the Thunderwolves around and move to engage the Forge Fiend with them on the left flank. While the Grey Hunters moved into position to fire on the Chaos Bikes, I also unloaded my small Blood claw group from my land raider to move to engage the bikes as well (those bikes had melta guns and were moving in on my land raider.) The raider backed up a little but maintained clear view of the center of the field to fire on the mess that was setting up their with my large Claws unit advancing toward chosen marines(behind a rhino), cultists, and the demon prince. The wulfen also where moving within 12 inches of the claws to increase their effectiveness. Scouts sat tight on their rooftop they deployed on, and my Rune Priest Teleported in right behind the Sorcerer who was near the forge fiend and during the psychic phase was denied his powers. During this shooting phase the Wolf Scouts had the most successful shots on the demon prince, and the rhino felt the heat of the lascannons from the landraider and was killed but did not explode. Now we entered into the charge phase where the
TW charged the
FF and the small Claws charged the bikes, both where successful and only 1 Claw was killed during the over watch.
TW nearly killed the
FF, while
BC left only 1w on one bike while the other two died.
For the second turn the chaos warped in his term squad to help with the rune priest and his warp talons warped near an objective on my side of the board. His
FF and Bike fell back allowing his other units in the areas to fire on my claws and
TW. I lost 1
TW and 2 Claws (passed moral test). The devastators missed the
LR again as well as several other misses or saves that occurred leading to no further damage in the shooting phase. Next the Chaos Cultists charged my Wulfen and were able to actually take out one and damage another(though the Demon Prince and Chosen failed their charges).
Now it was my Wolves turn again, a bad shooting phase followed with my scouts all missing, 14 Krak Grenades missing from the large
BC unit(all aimed at
DP). and finally my
LR was able to land 12 damage on the
DP and vaporize him. All other shots missed or where saved. Then the
TW charged (finishing the
FF) and the wulfen finshed off the cultists, the rune priest charged and killed the Sorcerer, and the Large
BC unit killed the chosen. the
GH charged and killed a Chaos Marine unit. The small
BC finished the Bike. This left only 1 Chaos Marine unit, the Term unit, the Devastators, and the Warp Talons for the Chaos, while my wolves lost only a few models to this point.
After some convincing to continue playing, the devastators where able to do 7 damage to the
LR, the
TW finished the rest of the Chaos marines, Wulfen charged and killed the Terms. (who kept shooting the Rune Priest and only ever got 1 damage through to him), and the grey hunters charged and killed the Devastators. After this turn 3 I finally accepted surrender.
All and all it took us some time with some second guessing we did, this was our first game with new edition, but it did seem more streamlined then 7th did. I enjoy the way the charge and fight phases play out now. It is tough to guage off this how fair power level games are, Chaos had definite troop advantage, Space Wolves (being Space Wolves) had strong gear selections (ie the 100 points difference). I am excited to try out some different builds and keep fighting.
