So getting ready for my first
GT of 8th ed, and I'm kicking around a lot of lists. A good
GT list should have a trick or a gimmick in addition to being solid fighting force, and probably the best gimmick Necrons have currently is the Grand illusion, which lets you redeploy the deceiver and a D3 additional units anywhere on the board outside of 12" of an enemy unit. I take this a step further in what I like to call a matryoshka style deceiver bomb, the deceiver redeploys two night scythes who immediately drop troops that were deployed to the tomb world, effectively doubling the deceivers ability. The goal is to
cross the T on the enemy while hitting them with a (hopefully) brutal alpha strike that will put them hundreds of points behind before they can react. There are a lot of moving parts so I'll go over the high points:
1.) Use tomb world deploy from the night scythes to get first turn. When you deploy the night scythes at the same time you can deploy any number of infantry units to the tomb world, so the first drop can be four (or five if I'm worried about it) units. At a seven or eight drops I should be pretty competitive for first turn, grand illusion happens after seize so even if I get seized on I should be safe.
2.) After a command point there is only a 1 in 9 chance of me not getting 2 or more units to go with the deceiver. 89% seems a solid enough number to rely on.
3.) If I can't go first, or if I don't want to be close to the enemy I'll go for encirclement to reduce the chance of multi charges and force my opponent to spread out or only take on a portion of my army at a time.
4.) Deception is also part of this lists, as I can redeploy my heavy hitters instead of my night scythes and then use the night scythes to have 80% of my army anywhere on the board by turn two. This much mobility will hopefully make me very hard to counter or predict.
5.) Taking a patrol means I'll be short on
CP, but it also means that I'm all beef no filler. I don't have to take a third troops choice or a second
HQ.
6.) scarabs and wraiths are screening units and a
CC threat against enemies like scions and tau. They will be encircling my hard hitters (stalker,
DDA, Heavy destroyers) to protect against deep strike shenanigans.
7.) my back line will all have 36"+ range so they can participate on first turn alpha strike.
So what do you guys think, how would you fight this, can you spot any glaring weaknesses?
