Back in 2015 I made a first attempt to get into 40k. I really enjoyed ( and still do ) enjoy the backstory of the T'au. But due to real life and no close by gaming community that actively played 40k I let the starter box gather dust. I now however am back at a point where I have the time to start playing again and even found a place to play.
I am a bit confused about building up an army though. Reading around on the net there are so many options and possible setups. I have a starter box of T'au and after my last visit to the store I ended up with a start collecting tyranids. Both factions interest me but I'm guessing with the starter box alone I won't be doing a lot of battling.
However deciding how to set up everything is proving difficult especially with 8 edition out and alot of people still getting their bearings.
With the changes to how T'au play in 8th i'm also not sure if I am going to enjoy their play style anymore ( I was kinda fond of the hit and run tactics they where known for which seem to have gone out of the window with this edition for now ) Tyranids I am looking at as a swarm army overwhelming fields with sheer numbers and i'm not sure they play like that. I'm also aiming for a 2k points army since it seems to be the standard to aim for at the moment.
So my basic question is what should I look into to get a descent army rolling in either faction and do the factions offer what i'm hoping to get from them play style wise?

Interesting that you say the 'hit-and-run' nature of the T'au is in question, when it seems to me that the T'au are more mobile than they have ever been before! Manta strikes, homing beacons, Coldstar commanders with 20" movement, 'Fly' keyword allowing you to fall back from combat and shoot, vanguard movement on both Kroot and Pathfinders, viable vespid. A for trying to get 2k off the bat, I wouldt recommend putting together a robust TAC 1000 point list first of all and painting it up and see how you fair.

The first rule of unarmed combat is: don’t be unarmed.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

From what I've seen so far:

Tau are looking good for Firewarrior firing lines with aura buffs and markerlight buffs as well as Battlesuit defence lines that can take the first round of charging then (if they survive) hopping out of combat (moving the defence/firing lines back) and opening fire on the unit that charged them.

Tyranids are all about the swarms now. Get tons of Gaunts and Genestealers and just march them up the board of have them pop out of the ground in front of your opponant all the while staying in synapse range.

TL : DR - Tau are all about mobile firing lines. Nids are all about unending hordes.
