For my first game of 8th I decided to pit my 6th ed Eldar which had gone 3-1-1 at a fairly competitive tournament versus my 7th ed Crons that had gone 4-0-0 in a more relaxed round robin tournament.
I was more interested than anything else to see how they would fair. During 7th I had played them against each other with the score 3-1 to the Crons.
I played points at 2k with each army in 7th having previously been around 1.5k.
I couldn’t (or more accurately) didn’t bother trying to fit the Eldar into a BF list so played effectively an unbound build giving each side 3 CPs for interests sake.

Eldar thoughts:
Spoiler:
This is quite a TAC list. It has a bit of everything: deepstrikers, multiple shooting sources, anti tank, psyker power and a good smattering of agility and speed. It definitely lacks any hth ability however and with wind riders having taken a big nerf is probably overly stacked with them.

Cron thoughts:
Spoiler:
The Cron army is quite resilient – at least it was in 7th. It dosent put out much firepower but does have some good agility and manouverability. It also has some hth capability with 2 x Wraiths and the CCB. It is however lacking dedicated anti tank and any psyker defense.

Mission:
Spoiler:
The mission is Open War on a 6x4 DoW set up with 4 objectives across the midline numbered 1-4 from left to right.
Each obj is worth 2 Vps and STW is also in play.

Setup and terrain:
Spoiler:
The bunker and two large ruins across the mid table are played as impassable and fully BLoS.
The rest of the terrain is as is from the BRB rulebook.
Both warlords choose the 6+ FNP ability.

Deployment:
Spoiler:

The Crons win the roll off to deploy first and choose to do so.
The also finish first and choose to also go first. The Eldar fail to sieze.

Cron tactics:
Spoiler:
The Crons decide on a semi refused flank effectively ceding obj #4 to the Eldar in the hopes of capturing the other 3 and possibly getting STW. They deploy the GAs on their right flank to push up towards the bunker #1 objective. They hope to drop the Mono turn one on objective #2 at the crater and use the Wraiths/CCB to capture #3 in the large central ruins. The Scythe will go where is needed and generally try and be annoying. The Deathmarks are held in reserve for a late game grab (note I decided to ignore the turn 3 = destroyed reserves rule here) and the Tomb Blades will hide for a late objective grab.

Eldar tactics:
Spoiler:
The Eldar play for all 4 objs setting up some Riders and their artillery backed up by the Farseer out of LoS on their right flank. The Serpents square straight off VS the GAs whilst the other two bike units and FireDragons in the third serpent place more centrally. The Hawks and Spiders reserve (note an error here as Spiders cant actually reserve with any special ability so they were allowed to walk on turn 1). The WWs support the left flank and will scout forward pre turn one.

Turn1:
Spoiler:

Cron turn 1:
Before the Crons turn the Eldar Warwalkers both move up 12” and tuck in behind the bunker preventing the Mono from deepstriking onto obj #2.
Both GAs move up 12 along with the CCB. The Scythe decides to try and wipe out the Eldar artillery early on as the Monolith decides to deepstrike onto obj 3 instead.
All 6 Wraiths advance up behind the central BLoS ruin.
Shooting sees the Scythe fire into the Eldar artillery but whiff spectacularly. Both GAs fire into the left hand WW chipping off a few wounds. The Mono then splits its fire trying to take it out but only reduces it to 1W. It fires the particle whip at the second WW but fails to hit/damage mostly.
A very average start for the Crons.

Eldar turn 1:
The Spiders are allowed to advance on and choose to combine their fire with the artillery and right hand bike unit into the Scythe. The Serpents hold their position as the Dragons disembark to go after the Monolith. The other bikers shuffle about a bit. The two WW split up, one to go after the CCB and the other to go after a GA.
The Farseer casts guide on the Scythe doing a measily 1W. Shooting then sees that whole flank open up on it reducing it to 7W.
The mid table Serpent and Dragons take 6W off the Monolith. One WW takes a wound off the CCB. The other one combined with the Serpents take 4W off one GA.
The other two bike squads split their fire one going after the CCB doing another wound and the second back into the Scythe doing 1 more wound.
Target priority in hindsight this turn was very poor for the Eldar, failing to wipe any single unit out and leaving the Crons mostly intact.

Turn 2

Spoiler:

Crons turn 2:
The Scythe drops off the first unit of Cron warriors near the Eldar artillery and then pivots and goes left to stay on the table and remain active.
The GAs hold their position as the BBC sets up for a charge on the wounded WW.
The Wraiths position and ultimately make a charge into the Dragons whilst the second unit of them swing far left to pressure objective #4.
Shooting sees a woeful round of fire from the Warriors fail to even wound the Eldar artillery. The CCB shoots and wipe out the wounded WW as the GAs chip 3W from the second. (I cant reacall what the Mono did this turn but from the following pictures it didn’t look like much!).
In hand to hand the Wraiths lose one model to OW and then charge the Dragons killing one for no losses in return. Both units pass their shock tests.
Another very average turn for the Crons having killed a single WW and tied up the Dragons momentarily.

Eldar turn 2:
The central Serpent moves up to collect the Dragons who fell back from combat and subsequently embark on it for safety. The rest of the Eldar shuffle about a bit as the Farseer smites the closest Warriors killing 2.
On the left flank both Serpents fire into the wounded GA again stripping off another 3W.
The remaining WW and both central bike units then fire into the CCB hoping for STW but only manage to reduce it to 2W.
The artillery, Farseer and bike squad then fire into the 8 man Warrior unit wiping them out as the last Serpent fires into the Monolith failing to wound.
The Autarch then charges the Scythe firing and attacking with his laser lance but only managing to take another 2Ws from it, leaving it with 2.
A little unlucky not to get STW that turn for the Eldar with the CCB making some good saves. Combined fire reduces the Warrior threat on the right flank to nothing however and they still have most units intact.

Turn 3
Spoiler:

Crons turn 3:
The CCB fearing giving up STW advances back to the safety of the deployment ruins. Both GAs move forward slightly and solidly control and fully block off obj #1. The Scythe starts its “square” laps around the board. The central Wraiths setup a charge on the now exposed Autarch as the other unit move to try and take out the Eldar right flank which is becoming problematic.
The Deathmarks and TBs bide their time for late obj runs.
Cron shooting is pretty ineffective this turn chipping a few wounds from a Serpent and the Autarch but little else.
The Wraiths then charge the Autarch and cause another 3Ws on him nearly claiming STW.
The Crons follow up their decidedly average first two turns with another although they still have bodies to come in via the Monos portal, Deathmarks and TBs hiding out back.

Eldar turn 3:
Eldar turn three sees the bikes on the right hand flank move away/out of range of the approaching Wraiths. The FireDragons disembark to go after the Monolith again. The Autarch retreats from the Wraiths leaving them exposed. The other bikes shuffle about a bit.
Shooting sees the artillery and bike unit wipe out two Wratihs who pass battleshock. The Dragons and central Serpent reduce the monolith to 4W but it holds firm.
The other bikes shoot into the exposed Wraiths killing another as the Serpents whiff VS the GAs.
At the half way point things are fairly even. Currently the Crons hold obj 1 and 3 but the Eldar have most of their units fully intact and are still highly manouverable / shooty.

Turn 4
Spoiler:

Cron turn 4:
The start of turn 4 sees the Scythe drop of a 10 man unit if Warriors into the crater containing obj #2. It then flies left continuing its square around the board. The surviving Wraith that targeted the Autarch doggedly pursues him setting up a charge for later. Having regened a wound the CCB accompanies the TBs forward to backup the midfield. The GAs once again hold their position securing obj 1. The last Wraith on the left flank advances backwards behind the BloS ruin ready to ninja grab obj 4 next turn.
Shooting sees the Monolith wipe out the FireDragons as the Warriors and GAs take out the first of the Eldar biker squads.
Hand to hand sees the Wraith wiff and the Autarch chip a wound from it.

Eldar turn 4:
The Eldar decide that obj 1 is a lost cause and go full out for obj 2 and 4, hoping to secure them and take out the Monolith this / final turn to secure #3.
Their entire army moves up around obj 2 whilst the right hand biker unit move into position near obj 4.
Shooting sees most of the left flank fire into the Warriors in the crater destroying them completely. The right hand flank bikers along with the artillery finally finish off the Scythe.
In hth the Autarch finishes off the last Wraith.

Turn 5
Spoiler:

Cron final turn 5:
Going into the final Cron turn the score is 2-0 to the Necrons.
In the movement phase the empty GA moves forward to try and snipe the Autarch for STW. The second one which is occupied disgorges its 10 man Warrior unit.
The TBs and CCB move to try and prevent the Eldar taking obj 2 as the Deathmarks deepstrike as close as possible to obj 4. Unfortunately for them however they cannot get with 3”.
Shooting sees the Autarch make significant saves and survive VS the advanced GA. The Warriors combine with the second GA to take out both units of disembarked Dire Avengers.
The CCB and TBs chip a few wounds off the biker squad hovering around obj 2.
The Deathmarks shooting in combination with the remaining Wraith charge kill one biker and wound another but they hold on.
The Crons finish their turn holding 3 objectives.

Eldar final turn 5:
The Eldar need a big final push to turn this around.
The right hand flank bikers disengage from the Warith and fall back out of range. Everything on their left flank moves and tucks in as a close as possible to obj 2.
Finally the Swooping Hawks deepstrike landing on obj 4 and securing it.
Shooting sees the artillery take out the last Wraith which ended up being a bit pointless.
The bikers and Serpents fire into the TBs killing one and wounding another. They hold however in place. The Autarch and last Serpent fire into the Monolith trying to destroy it and leave obj 3 uncontested. However they fail to do so and it survives.

Final result:
Spoiler:
The Crons hold objectives 1 and 3. The Eldar hold objective 4. However they have sufficient bodies and models around object 2 to also claim it. Neither side got STW.
The game ends in a draw 2-2.

Post game thoughts:

Spoiler:
A lot of 8th ed reps Ive seen seem to end around turn 2 or 3 at the latest so either these are two incredibly tough and resilient armies or I played crud with both of them.
It think its certainly the latter.
Target priority was most definitely an issue for both with too much split fire, poor target priority and chipping wounds off here and there whilst not fully taking a unit out.
Having not learned off the stats, str or T of the various weapons/units some of the shooting was a bit of a “shot in the dark”.
I also feel I played quite cautiously with both armies, the GAs/Warriors and Serpents/DAs holding back for most of the game.
Hand to hand was minimal this game and felt a bit underwhelming unfortunately.
I think the overall Cron idea to focus on the 3 objectives worked, however this seemed to change as the game evolved with the Wraiths and Dearthmarks finally going after obj 4 . They might well have been better used around the other objectives. They were definitely unlucky not to get STW, having assault the Autarch twice and put a decent amount of fire into him with the Monolith. In hindsight I should have used the Wariths down the right flank with the CCB, taken out the bike units around the forest and then consolidated more centrally with the whole army.
The Eldar were a little unlucky not to take out the Monolith, the first FD shooting phase was pretty woeful and they consistently tried chipping it to death to no avail. They definitely had a problem with the Cron vehicles, massed str 6 AP0 or AP-1 VS T7 and T8 simply didn’t cut it. The Scat bikes were also fairly underwhelming although they did survive relatively well. I think I played too defensively with the Eldar and target priority was definitely off for them. I think they should have focused the Monolith down much earlier and then mass consolidated around obj 2-3 as they were always going to secure 4.

Hope you enjoyed the rep!
