Horrific Howling Banshee

Charleston, South Carolina

Quick note, charging big guns with a vehicle is a great way to shut them down from shooting.

Now my question

Ok, my banshees and dire avengers surrounded a chimera so that it had no escape. My opponent wanted to exit the vehicle.
The rule says a disembarking model "is placed" within 3" of the hull.

So, within means, you don't have to be wholly within right? Second, he wanted to hop over my dudes that were based with the vehicle.

Since you are "placing" the models, can they pass right through my bases?

Lastly, and I think I know the answer. The last step in the fight sequence is to consolidate. Does that happen on a unit by unit basis as they finish swinging?

Another issue kind of for argument sake

From the Main Rulebook FAQ:

Q. Can you clarify what the difference is between ‘wholly within’ and ‘within’ for rules purposes?
A. If a rule says it affects units/models that are ‘wholly within’ then it only applies if the entire unit/model is within. If it just says ‘within’, however, then it applies so long as any part of the unit/model is within.

Yes, RAW you can disembark through enemy models as long as you can be both writhin 3" of the transport and more than 1" from the enemy.

And yes, consolidation happens unit by unit and you fight with them individually.

In the chimera situation, you can attack in melee if you are exactly at 1" from the hull. If you do this, and taking into account your models bases measure more than 1", it's impossible for the enemy unit to disembark within the 3" required and will be destroyed.

This. If you have enough models to surround the vehicle, do so in a ring just within 1" away from the transport and do not pile-in. It will potentially prevent the disembarkation.

Imagewise rather than frogleaping over your Eldar or pushing through them they probably got out through the top hatch to deploy legally to the side of the vehicle.

No go on that one, math says your opponent is allowed to place his models.
He has to have a sliver of his base in those 3" and 1" away from the eldar. But the eldar are on bases that are 25mm, which is just under an inch. So he's allowed to place his models 3"-0.4mm away from your eldar.

But that's not all, that is if he places them in a straight line behind the eldar models, if he places his models staggered behind the enemy infantry it will even work with bases bigger than an inch.

This kind of gamesmanship pisses me off.

Well, the trick works if you possition your models a bit more far than 1 inch, 1,5" or so. You only need some of your models within 1" to be able to attack with the whole unit. So you can alternate your minis between 1 inch and 1.8 or so and it is impossible for your opponent to deploy in most cases. And that is if the sorrounding unit needs to melee, if not, just stay outside of combat at 1.5" and it works perfectly.

Forge the narrative a bit, and suddenly that squad that is moving "through" the enemy models is actually climbing out of the top hatch of the vehicle and taking a running leap over the Eldar scum trying to hack their trusty Chimera into pieces.

So I ran into a very similar situation in my game the other day and I just want to ensure that we did it correctly.

My unit of 3 Shining Spears and my Autuarch surrounded my opponents rhino with about 8 beserkers and a Dark Apostle in it. The Spears and Autuarch are able to essentially surround the vehicle (though there are small gaps between their bases due to only being 4 of them).

So after we roll for explosion he then pull the tank and then disembarks his 3 inches? Or is it different for an emergency disembark since the vehicle exploded? Do they exit first before pulling the tank and do they still get their 3 inches deployment or are they just sat down in the crater of the tank.

Essentially we played it that they could try to disembark 3 inches but had to be more than an inch away from my bikes to survive. In the end only his Dark Apostle and 1 Beserker were able to be placed.

Does this sound right or did we do that wrong?

There is no emergency disembarkation.

You always disembark the passengers (within 3") before removing the transport. Sounds like you did it correctly.

It depends on the base size if you can prevent models from disembarking. 25.4mm equals 1 inch so if you are using 25mm bases then 1 row could never stop the disembark, however if you are using the 32mm bases etc, one row could stop the disembark.
