The Necron RP Blob is a study in codependency, plain and simple. At its most basic, it comes in at just under 500 points.

HQ : Cryptek w/ SOL ( 1 foot assault -2)
TR : 10 Immortals gauss ( 2 foot rapidfire -2 )
FA : 3 Destroyers ( two 2 foot assault -3, one 3 foot assault -4 )

Keep it tucked in at the center in a 3 inch bubble and you have 3+, 5++, 4+++ AP-filled shooting goodness.
The character is safe (discounting snipers) at the center of the bubble.
The 3W Heavy Destroyer protected by the two 3W Destroyers dying first (usually).
If all 10 Immortals are not downed in one turn, 50/50 says they will be back.
On paper, it looks okay ... sort of.
On the tabletop, it quickly looks up at me from a depth of 6 feet.

A 9" flamer that autohits as it advances due to assault is crippling.
My opponent can get 3 Stormtalons for what I spend for this one blob.
The blob walks forward at 5 inches a turn.

Is RP viable any longer? Or am i just using it wrong?

It's..... not that great.

Its good if your opponent doesn't know how to play against necrons, but if he does you never get it. Which wouldn't be a bad thing if it wasn't baked into our basic points costs, hence why our army is so expensive. Most good lists atm bypass it or use untis that dont need RP to function/be tied to a HQ.

Scarabs, and Tomb Blades (albeit they are very expensive) are the best CC and shooty units we have.

Cryptek/lord/overlord's are too slow, we lack the mobility to really be able to position our troops (without paying through the nose for subpar vehicles).

Just wait for the codex, hopefully we get better in it.
